I don't even know where to begin x'D
I just keep seeing OC's that totally defy all logic in the fandom they're in. Like being sisters or brothers to a certain character or a lover of another character...
And being the wrong age to match either of those...
Or, even better, crazy hybrids of more than two animals o.O Or maybe even a fashion sense that's utterly and completely different from that fandom's setting (that one's pretty common actually).
I mean, yeah, it's your OC. Technically you can do pretty much anything you want with it. But can't we try to follow the logic of the fandom that OC is in? Cuz it's making all the other OC's look bad, lol.
There's a reason why there are people out there that dislike OCs-- really, there is. They're not being overly spiteful or anything.
Meh, that's my "rant" for the morning
((Yes, I'm tired. Hara-chan and I stayed up late watching Sherlock Holms xD))
And yes, that's Allen up there with an "Eh?" kinda face most likely towards the kitty wolf hybrid wearing Aeropostle clothing in the end of the 19th century that's been paired with him even though that OC is only 12 or somethin'...
Oh, and did I mention they had a kid? Ya know, even though Allen's only, like, 15 (or 16) and is totally not the type to do that

Sign of a bad OC when they hybrid twelve things in one...

This is always fun to put your OC through.

aaaw, dude this is what it said
Yuuki Takuru isn't a character: she's you, or you as you'd like to be. She is so impossibly hip that she has difficulty seeing over her own pelvis; she'll probably die young, but damn, will it have been a good life. She may have sometimes thought that she was special, or destined for greater things, but probably dismissed the idea as a fantasy. She's had a rough life - to say the least! Angst? Histronics? Her speciality. (And you, her creator, have spoilt her rotten and given her everything she wanted. )
You identify far too heavily with Yuuki Takuru, and defend her from all sides, never realizing that in your quest to make her perfect you are alienating your readers. Back off and take a break. "Try writing the story from the viewpoint of a different character, one you have less sympathy with... or writing a different story and coming back to this one."
the stuff in the brackets is untrue, she hates me and i don't give her anything she wants
and the stuff in ""s i've already done

I hate to say it, but a lot of people get touchy when their OC is pointed out as a Mary Sue / Gary Stu. I'll admit the test I posted isn't perfect because it's a simplified version I found online based on the more complicated test.
If you read the disclaimer the person who made the simplified test posted (or it used to be there. The site updates, after all), you might want to take the "full" Mary Sue test and see what that gives you.
But seriously, don't get mad at a computerized system that just grades based on what you check. You're the one who checked the symptoms of Mary Sue that applied to your character.
You really might want to go back and take a hard look at your character according to the things the test pointed out. On the last page of the test it gives you a bunch of scores. Green is good with a healthy dose of the things on that page, blue means that (gasp!) you actually might have scored too low and made your character uninteresting, and though I've never gotten it, red means OMG MAKE CHANGES!!!!!!!! The goal is to get a character mostly green, but if you get a blue score than it's fine.
If there's smoke, there's probably fire. Try showing your character to people other than your closest friends who are obligated to say "this is wonderful!" If you want, I'm a beta reader on FF.net. I wouldn't mind taking a look at your character's profile.

Beta reader is a "second reader" or proofreader. Basically, I proofread fanfictions and go, "Wow, this is terrible" or "needs tweaking" or "good to go" and correct grammar and spelling along the way.
I've had lots of practice on Sues this way, actually...
If you give me a link, I can poke over and take a look.
And like I said before, take a look at the original Mary Sue Litmus test. It might be a little better for your purposes if it's a fanfic character. Though I warn you, it's a lot longer.

Chikita, I am SO happy that you try to bring some sense of common sense into this community. >83
OCs (of FCs, whatever) deserve some love! It's not that hard to create an OC into an already existing reality. You just need to do your research.
And please, people, your OC/FC does NOT need to have special powers/curse/strange looks and what not to be a great character.
Look at Miranda. You can't get any plainer. And she's awesome.
And srsly? A 12 year old having a child with a 15 year old? And that 15-year old is Allen? Come ON. That's just plain stupidity.

I know right? Miranda's epic!
I have seen it x'D At first it's just like "okay..." then you start laughing at the second incident... and then you don't stop seeing it and it becomes ridiculous

Koto-wari In reply to ChikitaWolf [2011-08-07 17:15:04 +0000 UTC]
Yes, she's amazing. <3
Oh my god... You wonder if the creator every thought things out well, or just said "I want my character to be my age... But I also want her to have children with Allen.." (but forgets to mention that'll happen in the far future, or something).
I haven't seen it yet (don't search well enough, I think... I'd like to keep my sanity. ) but I already find the thought ridiculous.

Just thought of another thing.
I've noticed that a lot of oc's will have a Japanese name when they claim their oc's are of a different culture (mostly European).
Ok, now I'm done.

Ah, yes, how could we forget that one x'D
I get aggrivated when people start assuming my OC's name... her name's Kira, but her original and STILL name meaning is Gaelic as her mother was interested in the language.

CloudyDreamer14 In reply to ChikitaWolf [2011-08-07 17:53:57 +0000 UTC]
It's actually quite interesting to look up names from different cultures because they sound so different in a cool way~.
Really? That's interesting. Very creative! ^_^
My DGM oc's name is Caprice Rossi, which is Italian, and I thought her first name sounded weird because it's nickname is Capri like the pants, but I chose it because it means "impulsive" and matches my character. :3

Haha, yes! I see oc's all the time for D. Gray Man who are either:
1) A main characters sibling (it's impossible for all of them, but I'm not gonna explain why cause that's what google is for, look up their profiles) xD
2) Cursed like Allen, somehow are the Heart, a Noah/exorcist, or something really different/weird that all the attention's on them and not the main characters.
3) Bring inventions into D. Gray man that haven't been invented yet (jeans/sneakers/t-shirts included). There are dress up games on deviantart like > [link] with some really cool clothes based in the 19 century.
Well, that's my rant. ^_^

ChikitaWolf In reply to CloudyDreamer14 [2011-08-07 14:47:23 +0000 UTC]
1) Quite hard to get that into the plotline, though I have seen ONE OC do it once before The other ones were rather... failures ^^" They had to twist the plotline so much it was disappointing
2) The attention has to stay on the main character for being the strongest -.-" That's a pet peeve of mine, lol. You can write all about your OC during your fanfic, but the main exorcist should still be the main exorcist ;3
3) I've brought jeans into mine |D Hoshino tends to add in stuff that shouldn't be there, but you're most definately right-- overdose is ridiculous, lol (I AM SO CHECKING THAT LINK OUT)
Awesome rant~!

1) Haha, yeah! I think it's fine to add your own original characters, but they shouldn't affect the other characters that drastically (like somehow being apart of their background in a BIG way). TOO MUCH CHANGE!!! That's a reason why I don't write fanfics because I worry about keeping characters in character. :3
2) Oh! I've also seen the OC's who take up a lot of attention appear to be a lot stronger or a lot weaker than the main exorcist, so that they can save or be saved by the main character(s).
3) While watching the anime I was thinking that the characters are very stylish, perhaps too stylish... xD (I hope you enjoy it)!
Really? I'm glad you think so!!
