The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 2 (Planning and Drawing)Have you ever asked yourself "How do I make a sword?"more pricesely a katana. Well If you have asked that question then I am here to help you answer that. This swordmaking Tutorial will cover everything you need to know about swordmaking. It has an attractive layout, easily readable discriptions, easier to understand discriptions and step by step pictures to know which process you are at. These swordmaking tutorials are aimed towards swordmakers and propmakers, however anybody is free to use them at their own leisure to try swordmaking.
This second part of the Swordmaking Tutorial is all about planning the dimensions of the sword you are going to make. Once you have the correct dimensions you will then be shown how to accurately draw those sword plans onto your piece of strip pine wood. This tutorial is the 1st step into swordmaking and with that if you make a mistake at this early stage of swordmaking that mistake will stay with the sword until the end. So follow the instructions and successfully complete them all and you all ready to start the art form of swordmaking.

First things, I think you rock for posting this up. It'll be great fun to try and make myself a weapon - even if it's only wooden. ;]
Hm... I'm not pretending to know anything about sword making - seeing as the one I'll be attempting once school is over will be my first.
But 0.5 cm thickness seems awful skinny for the amount of sanding you have to do. That's only about this thick: |..|
I just thought it was odd, is all. Any particular reason that is has to be that thin?

chioky In reply to MasterHarper [2008-05-05 10:06:16 +0000 UTC]
Lol did you know If you measure the thickness of a blade of a katana, its only 4mm? if were making replica katana's then atleast 5mm thick wood is needed ^^

in wood terms yep thats thin but in metal terms thats pretty thick and a replica sword must look like metal ^^

We'll be needing wood with good quality such as yours, since wood from VN is pretty cheap and pretty suck.
