Description
The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 4 (Cutting out the Tsuba)Have you ever asked yourself "How do I make a sword?"more pricesely a katana. Well If you have asked that question then I am here to help you answer that. This swordmaking Tutorial will cover everything you need to know about swordmaking. It has an attractive layout, easily readable discriptions, easier to understand discriptions and step by step pictures to know which process you are at. These swordmaking tutorials are aimed towards swordmakers and propmakers, however anybody is free to use them at their own leisure to try swordmaking.
Right to make things clear first the "tsubsa" is the guard which is inbetween the habaki and the handle. Now this is the reale asy part of swordmaking where you just have to cut out the tsuba design out of MDF. However that is tottaly dependent on if the tsuba design is very complex. A word of advice when sawing always saw directly on the line and if you move away from that line make sure your not sawing into the tsuba. The sanding part of the tsuba will make it look clean and pristine.

I mean that the blade in my coping saw wont disconnect from the handle-thing. xP So I cant cut the middle of the guard out.

well, you would reconnect the blade, once the coping saw is back together again in the hole XD

The many fotos are like a film for me.
I can approximately think about the rest.
A Video would be cool but its much easier with the text-explaining.

I don't know if you noticed but it says:
"The Swordmaking Tutorial: Part 3 (Cutting out the Tsuba)"
Man! I wish I had the tools for this stuff.
Ever consider doing a commision? Could that even work, sorta like a eBay type thing...
π: 0 β©: 1
chioky In reply to Novoxy [2008-03-07 20:39:55 +0000 UTC]
all fixed thanks for telling me XD
Yeah not having the tools is a real problem when it comes to swordmaking
Yeah I hate commissions becuase:
1. I would be put under pressure to hit deadlines
2. I wanne make the sword for my own personal enjoyment, not money

Novoxy In reply to chioky [2008-03-07 20:43:20 +0000 UTC]
Well, money is always nice though right? Plus this would be a unique Zanpakutou that might give a challenge. I would say that sounds fun. =]
I wouldn't put a deadline on it anyway.

I earn money differently anyway XD Swordmaking to me is just enjoyment if I introduce money into this it feels like im a no different then a machine that makes replica swords every day. I am a swordmaker at heart ^^
Im sorry but right now I have a mission to acomplish anyway and I cant do commissions for several years ^^

half way there
you make it look so easy, i've started attempting to cut out the tsuba for shinso ¬¬ its really quite hard, any advice for cutting out the inside bit would be appreciated...

chioky In reply to eugenidesofattolia [2008-03-07 19:09:36 +0000 UTC]
half way there indeed ^^
Tsuba making is indeed easy, an im glad you ahaead with shinso ^^ though hmm the inside of the tsuba that could either be:
The center hole where you put the katana blade through, which just follow the tutorial
Or the inside of the "S" shape for the tsuba, My answer is hold the saw DIRECTLY DOWN and saw ever so carefully without getting the saw blade caught in the sides.

eugenidesofattolia In reply to chioky [2008-03-07 19:20:15 +0000 UTC]
it was the inside of the 's', i'll have a go when i have more time rather than trying to rush it
thanks for that ^^ i'm just a bit nervous about messing it up as its my first wooden tsuba i'll make sure to post pictures when i finish the guard so you can see how i've done
