Description Spectrum have instigated phase 1 of "Operation Sword", their first strike back against the Mysterons. The objective, to land a probe on Mars's moon Phobos undetected and take detailed photographs of the Mysteron complex and relay them back to the K14 observatory, specially built in the Himalayas.

All goes according to plan but minutes before the probe can transmit it's telemetry back, Captain Scarlet and Blue realise one of the observatory staff has been Mysteronised. As they leave the base to pursue, a bomb in the receiver dish detonates destroying the Observatory, antennae and all. The probe starts to transmit its precious information back, but theres no-one left alive to listen...

A "marmite" episode for a lot of people but one that really amazes me for several reasons. Spectrums plan is actually really complex. Well thought out and well described but really would have gone right over my head as a 4 year old.

And... they loose, not the first time this has happened in the show but still surprising none the less. Whats worse is that the bombs in place for most of the second act. The audience knows its there and its hard to watch the Observatory crew literally push the buttons towards their own destruction.

CLOUDBASE MOVES! Like, finally you actually get the feeling their on an aircraft carrier and not just a flying version of Marineville. Some cool Barry Gray music to go with it.

What is "Operation Sword"? it gets a few mentions here and there but is never really elaborated on. Unless it's spectrums plan to send a signal to the Mysterons but wouldn't that be better named "Operation Olive branch", "Operation White Flag" even?

Personally I like the episode and my friend AC sums it up very well in 5 seconds here : [link]

This is actually an old one which I never got round to uploading. Took a few weeks to do and get right, had a false start by trying to do the Aztec temple from Inferno. K14 ended up looking better. My SPV model is also awful and needed to be pretty much redone in Photoshop.

Made with:
The mostly ambiguous power of the Mysterons.

Simply 3d
Photoshop

I've always been fond of "Shadow of Fear". One of the most unusual Mysteron kills of the series, and seeing Cloudbase on the move is a highlight.

As for Operation Sword, although it's never mentioned again, I theorise that the rocket programme mentioned in "Noose of Ice" was part of Operation Sword too. Perhaps if Captain Scarlet had gotten a second series, maybe we'd have found out more. Would have been an interesting storyline to see Spectrum taking the fight to the Mysterons. Alas, we'll never know how the war of nerves ended.

Anyway, great image Chris!

Weird as it might sound, I actually loved that in this show, the good guys lost a couple of times. It made their war with the Mysterions more realistic and therefore made the wins more cool to watch.

I figure, going by the name, "Operation Sword" was a long range plan to strike against the Mysterions and shut them down. If not for good, then enough to make them rethink their plan of conquering. Granted, Spectrum was emphasizing on peaceful overtures first, but they had to have a plan for when/if the peace talks fail.

Just love this picture. What a fantastic large scale print it would make.  Pl let me know if and how I can get hold of one.  Well done.  Any other Anderson themed images planned?

Hi Chris

Been away for a bit so sorry for delayed response. Your fabulous picture of the two thunderbird recovery vehicle on the edge of the pit, is that available as a print I could order and get posted to Sydney Australia. I've had it on my home screen for over a year and am still fascinated by it.

Thanks

Paul

I'm a perfectionist, and so there is never anything I do that I am totally satisfied with. Even so, I think your S.P.V.s a good deal of action to make this a great image. Hope you do more action depictions of it. The only "Super Car" I really want to see on an episode of "Top Gear" would be a life size working original series Spectrum Patrol Vehicle. I'd like to see miser's Clarkson, May, and Hammond drive that beauty around a track at 200 MPH! Then I would want to drive it flat out across parts of the Mojave desert/ Death Valley, and the Basin and Range country in the SW USA.

I always loved the SPV, and was the proud owner of the Dinky toy back in the day. This image is excellent, on the whole. Something seems a little off about the 'bumper' at the front (I think it's the stark black lines), but that doesn't detract from the overall awesomeness

Well, I just looked at images on Google and it turns out that it's my memory that's off, not your image. Another step toward senility.

The SPV is way cooler and far better than the HIDEOUS Rhino in the new Scarlett series.

And yes, this was a shocker of an episode - never realised it was considered a marmite ep.

Lets be honest, in a war both sides view each other as the enemy and themselves the hero - so why should one side always lose because we see it through the other?

Well done here mate

The Rhino was interesting but was far too much like a train for me, Turning that thing must have taken ages.
