See, this is the way to draw the Thing; too many artists try to give him human musculature - and a neck! Anyone who's seen Kirby's original drawings should know that Ben's head is a circle that just sits on top of the larger circle that's his torso. He's like a snowman made of orange rocks.
Please observe my similar treatment: [link]
Anyway - great job, as usual!

Thanks. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of some of the newer looks of Ben.the muscle tone in particular. It's tough to draw a character that doesnt have a neck though hehe.

"It's the ever lovin' blue eyed thing!"
This looks nice, but I noticed something. Because of his hand, it kind of looks like he's naked.

Thanks. I don't know about a print, but I'm working on putting a nice quality sketchbook that will probably have these two in there.

I really like this, as well as all you've done, but, one thing kinda bugs me about this one.
It really doesn't seem like 'ol Ben is really grabbing that piece of concrete or whatever it is. It just seems to be sitting on the end of his fingers.
Maybe having that hand a bit more closed, and moving the drop shadow a bit closer would've stengthened that a bit.
All in all, it's a REALLY MINOR nitpick, which I'm best known for, unfortunately. LOL.

Great job! Glad I'm not the only one who noticed he looks like he's sans pants. It's a powerful piece, man. Looks like the John Byrne version of the Thing to me (at least in the face).

Thanks. It's a bit of a texture overload. Got carried away and probably should've held back a bit. It's my first Thing in marker hehe.

WOW....(AGAIN). So, what do you mean when say, "white paint touch-ups"? What do you use?

ChristopherStevens In reply to kkirven [2009-06-15 19:56:54 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. I'm using a white watercolor paint to punch up highlights and add texture to come areas.

Yeah, I actually regret that. I wish I'd spotted it sooner, but it's be nice if you could see some of his trunks.
Thanks!

Whew! I've really been enjoying the commissions you've been posting recently, but this one blows me away. Do you have your rates posted somewhere? Can guarantee anything, but this one definitely has me interested.
