Description Speedpaint 5/7/13
Time: 4:16

For this speedpaint, I decided to revisit an older piece of mine. I really like the idea, but I thought I could do much better with it now, compared to a few years ago.
I think it turned out much better. The process behind this piece has been saved, on Livestream. [link]

The awesomely punny title was suggested in the livestream by Tempo. [link]
I'm rather pleased with the result. It hardly seems like a speedpaint, in a way.

Don't hate me now buuut... I couldn't get around noticing a little detail... he's got the thumb on the same side of the left and right hand . On the front hand the thumb should be on the other side.

Other than that a nice image.

One of his palms is essentially up, while the other is down.
I've been gesturing, while sitting at my computer, and I think I can do that pose...
Maybe I didn't show that one of his hands is turned well enough, though.

Those are one area that tends to give me trouble, from time to time.

LordOfDragons In reply to Chromamancer [2013-05-09 12:00:30 +0000 UTC]

The turning is actually not the problem. Pay attention to where the thumb is. On the right hand this is on the left side looking from the ellbow to the hand. This is correct as the thumb is looking towards the body if he rests on the hand. Now on the left hand if you turn the hand around (since it's upside-down) the thumb is also on the left side (right side, turn hand, left side). So resting on the hand the thumb would be pointing away from the body. Confusing I know . There's though a simple rule you can use to avoid this problem easily: down-towards, up-away.

Meaning:
- If the hand faces down the thumb faces towards the body
- If the hand faces up the thumb faces away from the body

I hope this helps ^.=.^

While I love and adore your new style. I much prefered your older style.

But I must say that this piece is truly stunning...it makes me think of a some sort of intricate story that explains why a dragon - creatures know for their great knowledge of the natural world - would waste their time reading books, something made for humans.

Chromamancer In reply to HaruTotetsu [2013-05-08 13:02:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
Which piece is your favorite?

I know these speedpaints aren't as detailed as the ones that I spend more time on, but I think they're a good way to practice. Also, I can probably make 10 in the time that it takes to make one of my longer pieces. These speedpaints have been a good way to refine my technique, and focus on the important details.

It is difficult to consider a piece to be done, when I could spend longer on it, to make improvements, though.

I think any piece that inspires any ideas, even if nothing comes from them, has reached a height most people strive for but rarely achieve.

My favourite piece by you is "Balance of Power" .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to HaruTotetsu [2013-05-09 03:40:20 +0000 UTC]

That's what I like to aim for.

That one uses the digital painting style that I'm trying to improve with. It has a grander scope than the recent speedpaints, but one of the reasons that I'm doing these is to practice up for another large project.

Compared to my longer pieces, I'll probably consider anything under 10 hours to be a speedpaint.

I'm glad you enjoy this one.
