Description
... this is the first or second doodle I ever did for the Joker design... initially, there was the idea floating around that the Joker could be decked out as a 'mad scientist'. Also, I wasn't sure how far Eidos was trying to push the Joker's gruesomeness, so I did a few tries with the heavily scarred and torn mouth, but there was too much of a resemblance to Heath Ledger's Joker, so we eventually went a different route. This is the process I absolutely LOVE about design in general: the exploration of ideas... just throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks, BUT like I said before, the Joker was one of the hardest designs to nail down.

Joker is one of those characters where the border between caricature and realistic anatomy is often overlooked, but I always thought Β that the more gruesome and scarred versions are just made all the creepier when they are executed as anatomically correct as possible on features like the number of teeth and recession of gums in relation to realistic jaw and cheek structure/musculature. For that reason, the high cut one is nice to see just because of the direction that you took the teeth. A lot of other artists stretch them out more like they are in line with wherever they put his lips instead of actually attached to his jaw, and I just like seeing the understructure you present in these.
My favorite joker will always probably be Lee Bermejo's version, but as far as the balance somewhere between killing joke caricature and Ledgers hyper-realistic version... you really do nail it pretty hard.

He designed most of the characters in Arkham Asylum. Read the artist's comments. It'll get you far.

I know, that why I said "it looks JUST like the Joker from A.A". I always read the A.C's.

I wish they make Joker use this outfit in the game, just in some sequences. Maybe in the 3rd Scarecrow's nightmare sessions and have him examine or torture Batman, it will be awesome.
Great design. Very creepy

In MY mind, this is what the Joker was wearing when he was creating the Titan soldiers. I wish this had made it into the final game in some form.

I like this design. Knowing Joker I wouldn't be surprised that he would dress like that in the game, even if it was just temporary. The venom tank is also amazingly drawn.
I love the face on the top. Looks so funny!

i do like the idea of a self inflicted glascow smile. it would show how bat shit insane joker is and how he doesn't care about anything. but i also like the idea of the sight of his face paralysed with a grin driving him crazy. i'm conflicted

Wow...as hilarious as this looks (pun intended)
I could TOTALLY see this in the game. I'm so used to the final version of the Joker, but if this were the final version...I would love it just the same.
(Actually.....I think I do)

I love seeing these concepts. I'm not big on the scarred mouth concept, and I'm glad the game very turned out the way it did but... the topmost head just looks awesome. It's the facial expression. He just looks so happy, but every bit about him is sinister.

I love the heavily scarred mouth designs for the joker, but unfortuantly,it doesnt fit the character.Sure Heaths performance was mind numbing but its TOO dark, not enough "joke" or "clowning".In my opinion, best joker actor is Mark Hammil, the voice of AA's joker and the batman cartoon from the 90's.The AA design of the character is the best in my opinion, good sir,YOU have designed the best Joker in the media today
I want to be an artist like you one day DDD the joker is the best villain in my opinion.

Mad Scientist Joker ? DAMN thats brilliant...i Love how Eidos portrayed Joker in Batman A-A but this version is even more awesome than the one that was used in game because i think that the best thing in AA was the fact that it was faithful to the comic book but all characters got awesome redesigned costumes (I still cant belive that you actually made scarecrow even more awesome and scary) so it was like good old Batman, but at the same time it was something new..so the fact that Eidos decided to keep Joker as Classic as it can gets is a little disappointing because this "dr Killjoy" version of the Joker has a potential .
P.S
Scarred Smile FTW (Best one is the version with googles)

for some straaange reason this makes my gums hurt and i keep wanting to go and brush my teeth. AGAIN.
dear lord, that looks so painfull...
me and some friends are playing through "arkham" at the moment, and i'm here to tell you, if the jokster ever walked in that frock, dragging that tank, we would end up on the floor. it would be so awesome! ^^

I'm glad you didn't give him the scarring. The idea of him having a permanent smile is not accurate to the comics. Neither in Ledger's Joker or Nicholson's. Not to belittler either performance.
And although your design of him as a mad scientist is brilliant, I agree with others here. The version we see in the game is vastly superior. Although maybe seeing him wear that garb would have been funny for a certain part of the game.
In any case, great work as usual!
Quick question though: I heard that in the planning stages for this game there would be a Mad Hatter boss battle involving a tea party. Did that idea ever get to the concept art stage?

Ah well, not to worry. Although I'm glad you share my enthusiasm for the idea. What a shame we didn't see it put into action. Although, I suppose there was only so much they could put in the game.
Oh, and here's the interview in which I heard about the Hatter:

I think recently (specially after Heath's performance) there are two contrasting views of the Joker... one, as the character who's for the most part funny, but will also do some seriously messed up things... the other one, as a SERIOUSLY messed up individual who has NO problem doing the most screwed up things, and will sometimes do funny things.
I kinda like my Joker like I like my coffee: 70% ape-shit sadistic crazy, 30% funny as hell.

Gotta agree with you Chuckdee, the Glasgow Smile's a great idea.
But considering the amount of realism rendered in the game for the models... he'd come out more frightening than funny for a lot of scenes.
Would look great for the one scene about "Giggling and bleeding in a corner..." however.
Oh... and Steampunk Joker FTW?
Great stuff as always.

Mmmmh, it's a good design, but all in all I think I prefer the version that was in the end chosen for the actual videogame.
However, Harley Quinn's in-game design actually seems to fit much more with this version of the Joker.
I did a few tries with the heavily scarred and torn mouth, but there was too much of a resemblance to Heath Ledger's Joker, so we eventually went a different route.
Thanks for that!! Really, the scarred mouth in my opinion does NOT fit well with the Joker character.
