Description
Tutorial will work in Photoshop 7.0 and up, as for earlier versions, I haven't use them so I got no clue.beware of huge file size. And, keep in mind, I am no pro, not everything I do is perfect, so is this tutorial. It just shows you how I colour, that's all. You should know some basic functions of PS already before looking at this tutorial.
LOL, a tutorial after 2 years of the first request (forgot who it was from >.< ) and it's becoming a habit... I am starting to forget uploading stuff to DA and keeping everything to myself D:
Here is a tutorial I wrote back in January (I know...late). If you have any further questions, post them in the comment and I'll try my best to answer them. (note it's also coming close to my exam week so it might take me a while sometimes).
This tutorial is generalized to save space and size. If you want a even more specific tutorial on specific parts, I will consider it in the future.

it's just one tiny thing bothering me.. in your tutorial you wrote the further you are from light, the darker the skin becomes. It is true to a certain degree, because it's not only the light from the light source you have to take into consideration while making shadows, also the reflections from the light source as well.
So as an example the back of the neck should be a bit lighter, because there's always some light reflecting on it. In your finished CG pic, that person is standing in water, and water does reflect the light pretty good.
Maybe you already know this, just forgot to mention it, since I can see some reflections on the clothes from the water, but none on the neck ^^,
oh well, as a side note I really like this tutorial it's very helpful, and may all of us keep improving.

Thank you, well, as mentioned in my artist comment, I have said I am no expert ^^', I can't give you a perfect tutorial. Yes I have forgotten the reflective highlights on the neck (Thanks for telling me ^^), but I haven't forgot about using it. I did mention about reflective highlights (in general) in the second part of the tutorial ^^.
The reason I said "the further you are from the light, the darker the skin becomes" is for generalizing purposes. I thought saying it would make the tutorial easier to understand in short sentences. And the tutorial is geared toward beginners, so learning 1 light source as a starter isn't so bad. The tutorial ends with some mentioning of reflective light sources, so if anyone wants to look into it further, they are free to do so, it's just this tutorial won't cover this.
That said, my drawing style has changed since then. I posted This tutorial very long time ago. Looking at it again after 2 years, I can see a lot of flaws XD.

How do you decide which colours will make up the shading?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Cindiq In reply to Makishal [2009-11-12 00:33:12 +0000 UTC]
Hi there ^^, you can chose shading tones that are on the same gradient of your base colour. Say, I have sap green as my base, I could chose a darker sap green for shadow.
Or if you want more variation. I could have sap green for base colour, and then chose a darker tone on the whole spectrum of greens, or colours that are analogous to green on the colour wheel. For example, I could have a dark blue-green for shadow to go with the base sap green colour.
But after all, you can break out of these rules through trial and error, which is still the best method ^^.
Hope it helps.

I have a q/ if u can aid me on this one,i took a peak at ur CG tut ,and in part I i noticed the variety of colors u used for the skin shadow tone (i have the most trouble with that exact same thing) how to pic out all those diff.colors?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Cindiq In reply to aca985 [2009-04-21 07:55:46 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's explained in the tut.
The lightest shadows first, then darkest shadow last. The order of light-dark skin colours I gave in the tutorials are placed in chronological order. You apply the lightest skin tone first, then apply the second lightest onop of that, and repeat adding darker colours until you are satisfied. I hope it helped.

but I only use the Hard brush to get the sharp edges, not what you have there. People reading the tutorial should know that.
