Description
This incredible necklace is made with actual beetle wings - that are naturally a brilliant chrome green colour. They are "green Jewel Beetle" wings - from the family Buprestidae and have been used for hundreds of years as jewelry. This is the much more updated use of them - a combination of cyberpunk meets steampunk and goth. I can imagine it as part of an elaborate costume worn by the Queen of the Insects. Or perhaps an avid beetle fan - or an entomologist.
I'm certain some might find wearing beetle wings a bit scary but they are so beautiful and truly unusual. The one element of this necklace that really makes amazing is the clicking sound the wings make as they move. Really! It sounds chitonous. more details here on my clockworkzero.etsy site: [link]

Absolutely beautiful, but I'd be so paranoid about setting it down someplace and accidentally crushing it! Really like the combination of natural and mechanical in this, with the wings and gears... Depending on which way you look at it, it could be worn with tons of different styles and still match perfectly.

This is so great! I recently made a pair of earrings out of some similar Thai beetle wings, and I'm glad to see these interesting objects are the focal point of more jewelry.

Lovely, these beetles roam all over Thailand and I usually find them when ever I travel there and shake some stocks of bamboo. My mother always told me of this kind of jewelry, but I never did look around for it. But this is truly amazing, in its own classy, and thought responsive way. Congrats on the fine art!

I've got a cicada in the car, trying to figure out the best thing to do with the wings. Art is so close to mad science, it's such a joy! Lovely green, you photographed it so well!

I adore your beetle-wing necklaces. This one is particularly elegant-looking. Very regal, very beautiful. Are beetle wings hard to work with? I imagine they'd be rather fragile...

I've always wondered how you manage to put holes in the wings like that without SHATTERING THEM INTO OBLIVION. Are they tougher than I think, or are you just really careful? Enlighten plzkthx :3

I basically use my dremmel - with its little drill press. I think it helps that I keep the bits very sharp and go slowly. They are actually quite strong - about like fingernails. The wings naturally have a bit of a divot in them where I drill which makes it easier - but I've drilled through them everywhere without issue. I actually am doing some "jewel" inserts in them today.

i found a dead blue metallic fly in my moms pool the other day and i kept him. he's too tiny for earrings though but his head rocks back and forth and i made him sing to my daughter. lol
