Description

EDIT: I won first place in the judges section! Big thanks to all the judges and everyone who has faved and commented on this! You rule!

One of two entries for "Villains Gone Good" contest.

It was hard to choose a bad guy to turn good because Disney villains are so evil that it's hard to think of them as anything but. Then I remembered Sid Philips of Toy Story. As a kid, Sid seems like the worst; he's mean, nasty, and destroys toys for fun. But when I look back as an adult, I kind of feel sorry for him.

First, he probably doesn't come from the best household. It's never stated in the movie what his home life is like, but it’s obvious his family gives him very little supervision and probably very little attention in general. Maybe the reason he acts out is just a cry for attention.

Second, his destroying and mangling together of toys may be scary as a kid (especially in context of the film) but it isn’t that horrible. He doesn’t know that they toys are alive or that he’s hurting them. Let’s be honest, most of us played pretty rough with our toys as kids. And that’s what Sid is doing, playing rough. Not to mention his ability to make his own toys out of the parts of others shows a great deal of skill and creativity for someone his age. Sid could be very capable if given the right direction.

In the image, I have Sid putting his skills to good use, fixing his little sister’s dolls rather than breaking them. Maybe this is a sequel to the movie where Sid got proper therapy after raving about all his toys coming to life. Or maybe it’s an alternate timeline where Sid was always a good kid. Whatever floats your boat.

Oh no I meant the doll that Sid is holding, it looks exactly like the doll Molly from the Disney show The Big Comfy Couch. I thought it was a cameo.

Huh didn't catch that. neat. Big Comfy Couch isn't a Disney production. It probably aired there in your country. It aired on PBS here.

Oh ok, it aired on the Disney Channel here so I just assumed it was made by Disney.

(ignoring his cameo in TS 3) I'd like to think this is what happened with Sid after the first movie where after that crazy ordeal with Woody and the rest, he turned over

Hey! Sorry it's taken me so long to responded to you. I've been a little busy. I'm still not sure what I want to request. I honestly wasn't expecting to win this contest and didn't even bother looking at the prizes! I'll have to let you know later, but I promise I'll have something real soon.

Aww, it's sweet to imagine him making toys for his sister. Well done!

AsjJohnson [2014-05-31 20:34:59 +0000 UTC]

hm, I think I would rather it because he feels like being nice to his sister, and not therapy he was forced to take because everyone thought he was crazy. I like the idea of him getting along with his sister.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Code-E In reply to AsjJohnson [2014-06-01 14:24:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, I figured his stories of living toys might have been what finally got his parents to pay attention to his abnormal behavior and decide that he needs help. After some therapy, he learns how to better control his aggression and emotions. He isn't fixing the toys because he's forced to; he's doing because he wants to. He just needed someone to guide him in the right direction, which any good therapist would try to do.
Of course, you can see it as Sid naturally deciding to get along with his sister on his own.Its a valid interpretation.

it is really, really touching... I've always felt a bit sorry for him and for his sister, because they didn't seem to live in a happy house... and you've magically repaired this feeling with your cute drawing!!!!

the fact that he's repairing toys and that he has a better relationship with his sister makes my day!!

I agree, and as I found out in psychology this is typical behavior of kids who are abused and bullied by their own parents. I can totally see this happening,

your picture brings tears to my eyes

It amazing (and often sad) the details you see as an adult that you missed as a kid.
I don't think anyone has had that strong reaction to my art before. I'm very glad to hear it moved you.
