The prince was hosting a ball. People all over the kingdom were invited. Most of them were either wealthy, famous, or both. Justin was neither wealthy nor famous so he was not invited. Sadly, he returned to the chore of washing away cinders from the chimney.

Then his fairy godmother appeared. Justin was surprised mainly because he did not even know he had a fairy godmother. She explained to him that she could grant his wish to attend the ball, but warned that her magic only lasted until midnight. At that time, things would be reset to the way they were before.

Justin said he understood and accepted her magic. She went around the property looking for whatever she could find. A pumpkin was changed into a coach, mice were changed into horses, and the dog was changed into a driver and servant for her. Finally Justin himself was transformed into a beautiful woman wearing a fancy blue dress and glass slippers that he, or she, would never be able to afford under normal circumstances.

"We can't call you Justin anymore," declared the fairy godmother. "How about Cinderella after the cinders you just cleaned."

Cinderella agreed to the new name, thanked the fairy godmother for what she had done, and headed off to the ball. Upon her arrival, she did a little twirl and showed her glass slippers off to the coachman and anyone else who happened to be watching at the time. All eyes turned towards her as soon as she entered the ballroom. Some looked at her with envy, some with admiration, and still others with amazement.

The prince himself was amazed at her appearance. He personally walked over to her and asked her to dance. One dance led to another. Eventually he invited her to his private balcony where they could talk without anyone else around.

Cinderella was enjoying the night so much that she lost all track of time, until the clock started striking. It was almost midnight! That was when her fairy godmother's magic ended.

Cinderella explained she had to go and ran off as fast as her dress and shoes would allow. She lifted up her massive dress and petticoats as she ran through the castle and apologized to those who had to get out of her way. The prince attempted to follow her but she already had too much of a head start.

By the sixth bong, Cinderella exited the castle and reached the stone steps leading to her coach. Quickly she descended the stairs. On the way down she lost one of her glass slippers, but she did not have time to go back and get it. She had to leave immediately.

By the twelfth bong, the princess reached the staircase. He looked for Cinderella but she was already out of sight. Then he noticed the glass slipper. He reached down and picked it up. As he examined the glass slipper from various angles, he wondered more about the mysterious woman who left it.
