Words Below:

Ben went to the hotel for his class reunion.  The reunion was being held in a large room on the right side of the ground floor.  In a large room on the left side of the ground floor, a pageant was going on.  Ben arrived early so he decided to take a look at the pageant.

A woman stopped him at the door and asked, "Are you here for the pageant?"

Ben was stunned speechless.  He did not know what to say.

"I think you are here for the pageant," the woman insisted.

The world around him shook as a ringing sound permeated his ears.  Even his own body blurred and changed.  Gwen held up her hands in front of her face and examined them as if something was wrong with them.  Silver polish appeared on her fingernails.  After that she was satisfied.

"Yes, I am here for the pageant," Gwen replied.

"Right this way," said the woman at the door as she took her inside.

Gwen took a look over at the class reunion on the other side of the room and wondered what was going on over there.  Then she went inside the pageant room.  The room was full of girls about her age.  Some of them were talking to each other, some were practicing their routines, and some were looking themselves over in the full length mirrors provided for them.

Gwen went over to one of the full length mirrors.  She was dressed in red and black which went well with her long black hair.  She watched herself as she twisted and turned for an imaginary audience.  Her prop was a pink parasol.  She picked it up and spun it around being careful not to interfere with anyone else.

On one of the walls, a schedule was posted letting them know the order in which they would appear on stage.  Gwen was one of the last names listed.  She was glad.  It was her first pageant and she needed as much time as possible to prepare.  As her time approached, she left the room and went backstage to wait for her turn.

The beauty part of the pageant was first.  All she had to do was pose and look good.  Mentally, she went through all the poses she was going to do.  She managed every pose despite having no previous experience.  It was finally her turn.  She got nervous and did her routine far quicker than she practiced it which meant she had to add lib the rest.

Some remnants of her old personality managed to linger.  When she left the stage, her face was red with embarrassment.  She thought she did poorly and needed to make up for it in the talent part of the competition.

With her pink parasol in hand, she talked to some of the other girls in the pageant.  They talked about what they did right, what they did wrong, and what they planned to do next time.  They talked about other things too.  None of them wanted to talk about the pageant nonstop.

Gwen awaited her turn to go out there once more.  This time she did her dance with the pink parasol.  Although far from the best dance in the world, it certainly was original.  She had done her best and that was all anyone could ask for.

After everyone had gone, the judges announced who would advance to the next round.  Gwen was not one of them but she did not expect to be.  It was her first pageant.  Eventually, she would need to decide whether to keep performing in pageants or do other things.  It was not something she would need to decide right away but it was not something she wanted to put off for a long time either.

Gwen felt the woman she met at the door knew far more than she was letting on.  She would ask her what to do.  Most likely she had plenty of useful advice.  The problem was getting her to give it.
