Description
Personal commission for a scorpion beast creature. Was fun to render, though unfortunately i've forgotten the details on the name...something to do with Latin? I'm a little forgetfulCreature design (c)

I wanna see a nature show that features this creature. "The Scorpula feigns disinterest and casually steps past its prey, BUT THEN STRIKES FROM BEHIND"

LOL. the moment you said nature show...for some reason it reminded me of that old Family Guy episode with the fire engine and ambulances

Very nice, Al! Another striking design. The colours are really fitting; he's dangerous and poisonous, but it's got more than that road sign contrast. I think it's those burnished, fiery hues that offset that. The glassy part of his carapace/abdomen is a nice touch even though it renders the form a little ambiguous. Those pincers are horrible, beasts unto themselves (= gorgeous)! The snake tail is suitably noodly and definitely looks independent from the rest of the creature.
About those greeble shapes poking from his rear end; I really like how you've referenced the actual scorpion sting shape, seeing as you've replaced the tail with the snake/head; a smart move that adds loads of interest to the silhouette. My only gripe is small... it regards the tail; I'm having trouble visualising it from a different perspective and it's size is not apparent, at least immediately. Anyway dude, I could go on for longer, but I'll let you get back to it!

Many thanks Mr Phil! and thank you for yet another insightful critique! tbh, it's only now since you've pointed out the back parts looking like stingers that i realized, hahah. i added it in the early concepts and stuck with it cos i liked how it reminded me of those face huggers from Aliens
The tail is a bit tricky since the silhouette is so bumpy and the lighting (overall) isn't consistent, but then again, i almost always light things however way i want, so it's rather intentional. hmmm...maybe i'll try render a concept as realistically as i can next time. should be a good challenge

No worries, it's a pleasure. I think you have the right idea about being in conscious control of the lighting. There's an element of the beginner in thinking that a slavish adhesion to every particle of light is the right way to go; we are making art, not photography, and we have power over everything in the image. Still, it's hard to get the right balance/feel, and sometimes the lighting can end up being too perfect, or contrived.
Perhaps for your next concept piece, you could render things from one or two fixed lighting set-ups. An experiment, at least. I think though, that the end of the day, it's less about realism and more about creating a convincing illusion of form that serves your aims for the particular piece. Your designs are quite strong and so should take to such lighting well.

Ah, very well said, and my thoughts exactly (though i'll never be able to say it any better, hahah). A fixed lighting setup like 3-point or split lighting would be good actually. i'm always forgetting how so much of the lighting in movies is setup artificially.
