Description
Commission forZecora encounters a manticore in the snow.
I had fun with this one. <3
I imagine Zebras to be an in-between of unicorns and earth ponies; where they have some magical abilities and skills, but not others.

Cross between an earth pony a and unicorn = cross between a warrior and a mage = Knight-Enchanter.
That manticore is screwed.

ooooh the manticore looks so cool. Also I pricture zebras to be more like the original earth ponies: still very in tune with the natural magic of the land. As such they have some sway/manipulation over it and can read it well. Hence the potion making which was unfamiliar to Twilight. I don't imagine them able to do arcane style magic like unicorns, but more tap into the inate wild magic around them. We've basically seen that previous generations of earth ponies had to be aware of it: given how Granny Smith and her parents had to handle the zap apples. I think in general causing the plants to grow in this world is knowing how to pay attention to that kind of magic, and I wouldn't be surprised if earth ponies were the only ones who could truly sense it.
Anyway we all have our own in-head explinations. Either way this looks amazing!

This is great. It's a scene, so unlike the art style of the show, with actual depth and a visual inertia I can't take my eyes off of.

Zecora lives in the Everfree Forest, where threats like this abound. I'm sure she can handle this big pussycat. At the very least she is a mistress of illusion, so it shouldn't be too hard for her to leave the Manticore to grapple with an incorporeal, intangible monster while she calmly proceeds onwards.

Hmm,I do believe Ms. Zecora is in need of Glamdring's assistance Through trudge and snow and wind and rain, stand fearless against the Dark Lords reign. For when in doubt, call thy name: Glamdring, the sword of evils bane!

That's a good theory. I wonder where other horse-kin species fit into the mix. This actually makes a lot of sense. Perhaps in Equestria it accounts for their stripes? A mutation of Unicorn and Earth pony genes mixing?
Also, I've seen so little Zecora fan art. And while she's not got my favorite design, I love her as a character. So glad zebras get cutie marks too.

Interesting how Hasbro had Zecora be the equivalent of a Native African, thus making Applehack's reaction to her all the more interesting. That and I think the mark on her flank might just be a tattoo or something. Though it is possible it is a cutie mark as she is talented at gathering herbs. But at the very least if it is a cutie mark, Zecora's is very different from the others.

Hn, I assumed it was a cutie mark, since Zebras are a species of wild horse and the animation crew made a point of giving her one. Though I thought maybe their marks were a little more symbolic in appearance than the cute icons on the other ponies, which are variations of the domestic horse.
Also, I noticed The whole AJ/Zecora thing too. I wonder if that was intentional. Granted, AJ is based on the southern culture, and after growing up in the south, I can say that the culture here as a whole tends to fear anything it can't immediately understand or is radically different from itself.
(Unicorns weren't originally horses though, but I'm not going to go into that particular mythology-nerd turf, lol.)

Actually in my roleplays I am having it be a bit different. Zebras do not have cutie marks but instead tribal tattoos that one gets after proving themselves in some task or another, a mark given to a zebra by their family or clan.

There's not a lot of members of the equine family unfortunately... at least not many that would make for a graceful and interesting character like Zecora.
There are wild asses... but (for obvious, immature, reasons) they're not as cool as zebras.
There is an extinct member of the equine family called the quagga , and I think that would make for a very interesting character much like Zecora.
I have an idea for a quagga character... when I have the time I should draw it. <3

If we (read the signature for explanation) speak correctly they found the quagga to be a plains zebra subspecies (the quagga being discovered/named first also puts both the average plains zebra and quagga's scientific naming under debate. By scientific rules the plains zebra should already be classified as Equus quagga while the quagga should be Equus quagga quagga). As an extinct subspecies its genes can be found in the base genus (Plains Zebra) and thus be recreated by selective breeding (depends on ones definition. Kind of like recreating Aurochs using its descendant/domestic form the cow). Thus the Quagga Project was born and these little guys exist, the Quagga 2.0s.

The project is still running.
Also we both love this drawing. The snow and manitcore are wonderfully detailed while Zecora is kept just vague enough as to prevent a creepy mash up of realistic proportions and MLP proportion while still keeping it detailed enough to fit perfectly.

Oh, I've heard of quaggas. Shame there aren't any left. Zebras are really the only wild equine left, beyond asses (donkeys, for those who are sensitive) and horses as we know them that have gone feral. That explains why I couldn't think of any beyond zebras when I left you that comment.
