Description

Ever since I discovered Blind Channel thanks to ESC 2021, I got somewhat obsessed with the band. They struck a nerve. Some of their inspired me to create pictures with some original characters since the lyrics seemed fitting to them. Here's No. 5:

Another broken guy - might be I have a thing for them ... and for exoskeletons. I tried not to make it the same one as Sheridan's here , since it totally shouldn't be. The time that Melvin here wears his is a few decades later - the circumstances happen to be similar, but not identical. During the tournament for obtaining his official license as an elementarist (this decides whether an elementarist is allowed to use their power in public or if other measurements are to follow), he gets severely injured and barely survives by (seemingly) sheer luck. He ends up with a broken spine (among other injuries), a trauma concerning giants and water and a lot of guilt. So the lyrics of "Autopsy" nail the way he feels afterwards, broken and struggling to recover physically and mentally.

A word on these constructions he's wearing: The spine is an artifical replacement and enhancement. The visible part is a shield for the more vulnerable parts on the inside. I always keep on counting the units to fit it to the right amount of vertebrae (it covers 17). As long as it's healing, he wears a corset to support his torso and an exoskeleton downwards from the pelvis to allow him to walk and stabilize him. All of this, of course, when his recovery has somewhat proceeded from being comatose and all. Furthermore, there's another supporting element on his right arm since he also shatters his elbow.

And all of this is falling apart in the picture to underline the need to open up from the lyrics - which can be interpreted on several more layers that apply here as well, of course. Funny thing, though: I had to construct all of it in its working manner to draw it broken down. Otherwise I couldn't have made sense of it. It's metaphorical, though - Melvin doesn't break it at any point.

I'm far away from being a medical expert, so excuse me if I caused complete nonsense. It's fictional, after all...

This one is the first of the series that finally got more background and surroundings. First, I just drew Melvin's figure in the middle, then spent a lot of time pondering about the rest. By that time, I was pretty tired of my lack on ideas about backgrounds and committed myself to put more effort into them. Most of all because he really couldn't go alone to convey all the pressure, darkness and whatnot.

It totally didn't turn out as I expected, but I'm honestly proud of it.

Still, as for the whole series, the paper I painted on is absolutely unforgiving when I try to take a photo in good focus - it keeps on being blurry. And it's too big to scan. So I'm terribly sorry for blurs and quality losses. I tried my best.
