Description Recently read Wonder Man 1 (1986) and really enjoyed it plus he was one of the many Marvel super heroes who appeared in the wraith war conclusion in ROM 65. Had some free time this past weekend and that's how this sketch card happened romspaceknightart.blogspot.com…

Solid stuff old friend!  I've allways like Wondy!  I remember an issue of Avengers back in the glory days of George Perez/Pablo Marcos art where he and Thor are in a diner and Wondy wanted to talk about how he didn't feel he was "man" enough to be and Avenger,  That he lacked the courage,  unfortunately that conversation never got finished because they had to deal with Jocasta on the loose!  If anyone can help Simon find himself its ol'Odinson!  Hes faced just about EVERY threat in creation and stood his ground!  As it turned out Simon didn't need his help as found confidence in the passage of time.
P.S. Was i the ONLY guy who liked Wonder Man's "Outback Jack" look?!   Ha!

ya know in retrospect that costume wasn't too bad actually i think it was his original that was the real eye soar. speaking of Simon's every day guy kinda issues did you see the blog posting for this fan art? romspaceknightart.blogspot.com…

I did,  though i never got my hands on the miniseries(thanks for reminding me!  To Mile High Comics Robin!!)
I was in Basic Training and the ONLY thing you'd better have on your mind is BASIC TRAINING if you don't want
the Drill Sargent to wring your neck! Yeah Wondys Green/Orange/Black outfit sucked bildge water!  I also agree about the lack of more inks on that Micronauts giant size cover,  too bland!  (must have been a great fight though!)I remember Simon trying to break into acting,  though the last time i heard of it, i saw him in an issue of West Coast Avengers stunt doubling for of all people SEAN CONNERY!  Ha!

Actually that Wonder Man issue is a one shot and the story opens up with Simon on a film shoot for a commercial or soap opera episode. But it doesn't go so well and he finds himself out of a job and almost broke as you can see from the clip art in the blog posting.

So you're saying its just one issue, not a multi-issh ?  No matter,  I WANT IT!   Its a curious thing about Simon because he was an Industrail magnate back in the 50's,  I think it was debt that drove him back then to make a deal with some villian i don't recall and become Wonder Man and later an enemy of the Avengers.  There was an storyline in The Avengers where Simon turned over control of one of his old Steel works factories in Pittsburgh to Tony Stark,  that turned into some big todo with some monster, anyway i guess that pretty much left him penniless,  I don't think a man as proud as Simon would care to be an employee in the company HE used to own even if his boss is a friend and fellow Avenger.

Really nice, Maybe IDW will re-print the Marvel stuff. I'd like to see it on better paper and re-colored, still a fan of the originals though.

i seem to remember you saying something about that before but like i said IDW has no legal right to publish past or current marvel comics any more then marvel has a legal right to use ROM. every character ever appearing in the ROM series from Brandy Clark to Hybrid to all the superheroes who made appearances are all owned by marvel. and based on the mood at marvel when it comes to all things ROM i wouldn't count on them doing a solid for ROM fans in any way.

Awesome

Btw did you hear Hasbro got the rights to Rom as well as Micronauts? From what I read IDW is going to publish new comics and will most likely reprint the original series the same way they did Marvel's original G.I.Joe and Transformers series.

well this is as far as i know the first ever ROM/Wonder Man team up fan art so i figured you'd be interested in it. as to your question, Hasbro has had the rights to ROM ever since they bought out Parker Brothers many years ago as to how they got the rights to The Micronauts i imagine it was some sort of similar acquisition. the frustration for ROM and Micronuats fans over the years was marvel's unwillingness to approach Hasbro about re-acquiring the rights to publish those properties.
marvel's standard excuse for continuity stories over the last 15 years that didn't have ROM or key characters from The Micronauts is that they didn't own the rights any more. as if the fans didn't know that already. but really marvel was just dodging the obvious question, why aren't you getting the rights from Hasbro? in reality i think the powers that be at marvel just felt it was more trouble then it was worth, fuck em. i'm glad IDW had a little more faith in making those properties marketable again. when it comes to marvel (and DC) i make it a policy to not buy new comics it's straight to the discount back issue boxes when i visit a comic shop.

I am

I really think it was a dumb move on Marvel's part. Like so much of their late 1970s/80s history is tied to these two properties and without them they have giant continuity gaps. Like they keep reprinting the original Nova series which ultimately ended in the pages of Rom and they can't reprint it. Instead if you buy the Classic collection they give you a write up with panels out of context telling you Nova's fate at the end. It's the comic book version of giving someone blue balls.

I also find it insulting they keep trying to replace Rom with other characters. Like as much as I love Venom I will never read Venom: Space Knight because it's a retarded concept.

I think this coming year is when they are supposed to roll out the new Rom and Micronauts comics.

I'm at the point now where I have ratcheted my comic orders down to almost nothing because I hate Marvel doing this bullshit Secret Wars thing that is a total rip off of DC's Final Crisis/New 52. So many fans hated this concept when DC did it (and their sales show it) so it drives me insane that Marvel would attempt it just to merge Ultimate with Original MU. It's just a fucking mess.

I'm honestly losing faith in Marvel's direction since Disney took it over.

that's interesting what you said about that Nova collection there was a similar TPB collection for The Hulk called "Regression" in which they did what you described (write up with panels) for an issue that had a ROM guest appearance. the Secret Wars II Omni Bus is missing a ROM and Micronauts issue all together but ironically a panel with ROM from Secret Wars II issue 4 made it in the Omni Bus it was obviously an editorial over site.
love the original Secret Wars but always thought Crisis on Infinite Earths was really over rated despite the awesome George Perez art. when it comes to current marvel stuff i hear about things but like this new Secret Wars stuff but i'm other wise completely out of the loop. DC also sucks with their reboot i love the Suicide Squad and i can't stand what DC has done with them especially with all this Harley Quinn 24/7. i kinda miss the days where cult favorite characters like Wolverine or Boba Fett weren't these mass merchandising properties.

It’s just ridiculous. Like every Essential Collection they omit the Rom issues except the Essential Marvel Handbook volumes. Those still have the Rom entries.

But with the original Crisis on Infinite Earths it served the purpose of fixing DC’s horrible continuity. Before then nobody could tell what was happening half the time because it was a confusing mess of alternate universes mixed with the main universe stories and it became impossible to keep shit straight.

DC fixed that, made everything one timeline with a single history and erased the alternate universes from the main books. And then the wrecked it again after 20 years of having a solid history and now it’s a shitty mess again.

Marvel unlike DC has had a pretty rock solid time line and they retcon things as they go or update them and just kept going until this bullshit Secret Wars event. Now everything is just as messed up as DC is and it pisses me off to no end. I hate that now they have Ultimate Marvel characters mixed with regular Marvel and all these other weird ass alternate versions.

I agree, I can understand using the characters that bring in the money in a book or two but they over use them anymore and it just burns people out on the character and makes them a parody. Like Wolverine was in all the X-Men and Avengers books, on top of his own series plus making cameos all over the MU at the same time. It was ridiculous.

Now DC is doing the same thing with Harley Quinn. I adore the character but it’s just getting silly now.

I'm keeping an open mind. I realize it's not going to be exactly like the original but as long as they keep the basic concept of MASK, especially with the helmets being used to conceal the identity of the heroes, I think it will work.
