I'm astounded by all the praise this episode has garnered. Everybody's entitled to their own opinions. But for me, Crusaders of the Lost Mark has got to be the worst episode since Pinkie Pride and Magical Mystery Cure. I don't think its as bad as these episodes, but I still think it is a major disappointment.
It's bad enough that the annoying singing takes up most of the episode, but what really ruins this episode for me is that the cutie marks the CMCs earn effectively contradict everything that was implied in the Show Stoppers episode or even this season's Bloom and Gloom episode. Didn't those episode heavily imply that Sweetie Belle's talent was in singing and Scootaloo's in scooter riding? Nothing in the past episodes could have even given me the indication that their talents were in helping others realize their talents.
To their credits, at least Apple Bloom's and Sweetie Belle's respective marks have an apple and a music note. But Scootaloo's is very generic looking. It looks more like a Wonderbolts badge or something and gives no hints of her talent for scooting. And in any case, what does any of these have to do with a talent of helping others find their talent? No matter how you look at it, it's a cop out.
The whole episode is just a sloppy and anti-climactic mess of an episode that ignores nearly five seasons worth of little hints and buildup throughout the series. All that waiting for the CMC's to realize their special talents that have been staring them in the face. Instead they pull a complete 180 on us.

Exactly. I personally think that Starlight Glimmer attempted to sabotage the CMC's Cutie Marks. (This is assuming that she now prefers shields to equal signs.)

If FIM had a series finale at this point, this episode would be perfect way to literally end it on a high note.
This episode was not as dramatic or earth-shattering as "Magical Mystery Cure"; it seemed a bit more low-key, cozy and sweet. But the revelation of why Diamond Tiara was such a bully made a lot of sense. Sadly a lot of kids could relate to angry, bullying, high-pressure parents like Diamond's mom. How the CMC's finally got their cutie marks--forgetting themselves and helping others find their talents--was a sweet, heartwarming zinger that had me in tears.
I believe that with Applejack's teary congrats to her little sister, it's safe to assume their parents are indeed deceased. How they died is not important; many kids are being raised by grandparents for various reasons and can relate with little Apple Bloom.
The CMC's new mission and purpose will simply be a continuation of their accident-prone, clumsy and fun adventures together. And I suspect they'll open up the club to other blank flanks in town to help them find their cutie marks too.

Personally, I believe "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" was THE best in the series so far. It represents everything the show stands for. All of us, bronies and non-bronies alike, have become so accustomed to epic battles, high drama, revenge and darkness in our entertainment (Hasbro itself is guilty of this

You said it all brother! I have nothing to add to that. I rate this episode an A+ as well. I watched it twice and yes I did get all misty eyed. I am just an emotional pile of mush under the tough exterior. I hope there are more episodes that are as well written and planned out as this one was.

A-yup. There are a lot of background things to examine. These things are often clues to future episodes and what will be happening in them. The writers are getting crafty. It all started with the key episodes throughout season 4.
Now that the CMC have their cutie marks watch for them to play a bigger role in the show. The elements of harmony are, in a way, being passed along and slightly changed. Just a thought.

This was a really good episode overall, but my friend made a good point that much like "Magical Mystery Cure," it should have been saved as part of the series finale and made into two parts.

It's my new overall favorite in Season 5 by far, my 2nd favorite by writer Amy Keating Rogers (only behind Pinkie Pride), and my 3rd favorite MLP episode of all time (so in all fairness though, only both Pinkie Pride and above all else Twilight's Kingdom stand above it). And aside from The Return of Harmony and the other two episodes I just mentioned, it's my fourth episode I gave a full 5/5 (or to some people; 10/10), and it only gives TRoH out of all of these "perfect-rated" episodes a run for its money.

Slice of Life was admittingly good, but the plot was a bit too rushed and the background ponies were underdeveloped despite becoming at least a little more interesting than they were in previous episodes. So just a 3.5/5 (7/10)

You're right, I did cry a little during the last third of the episode. They just built everything up so well: DT's redemption, the singing, the pride. How could I not get a little emotional after seeing the CMC finally get their cutie marks?
