I really didn't see it coming that this show would present such a conclusion as that present in this episode, and I was thus really pleasantly surprised. I sat thinking of the potential of this kind of moral while watching through it, but I figured they would just pull something to unite them all by the end and conclude the episode on a universally happy note yet again. It was really lovely how such a scenario was offered but denied, and I feel it's indeed a very good message for the show to portray. It's of a nature I don't feel the show has touched upon too much in the past, one perhaps unsatisfying factor about most friendships. Some things just aren't for everyone and some friends, no matter how close, cannot do absolutely everything together.
This is my most favored episode in a really long time, so I'm rather glad I decided to catch up on this show again.
Lovely review, Sir.

Good message.. It's ok to stay a wimp and not learn how to enjoy something scary and to remain scared of a holiday that's not scary... ""Right."".. It was a fun story and all and I do give it A..
But I seriously doubt many kids would get a good positive message out this story because kids minds don't work that way... They are more likely to be annoyed that Fluttershy stayed a wimp or get the wrong message when she didn't have too go back home and hide under her bed.. Talk about going back to square one..
I thought the idea was for her to get out of her comfort zone and try something new and different and maybe find something about the holiday that she could enjoy with her friends who were obviously wanting her to try to be with them.. Not go back to being a total wimp...
And while I'm ok with her not wanting to scare her friends but to stay scared of something she don't need to be scared of and in fact should at least enjoy the holiday games and dressing up and giving kids candy.... So ..No.. I really don't think that kids will get a good message out of this episode.
On the plus side I learned that Fluttershy is Anime otaku just like me!!!!.. YAY!!!... So obvious who those cutout paper ponies were... Oh wait.. Why would Anime Otaku be scared of the one holiday they can cosplay to their heart's content and not be considered weird??.. That means... Oh great.. Closet Otaku Fluttershy.. Oh well maybe one day...

Fluttershy didn't stay scared at the end. She even said that she isn't afraid of NMN, but accepts it; she just doesn't want to be apart of it. Not everybody is going to grow up and enjoy a holiday like Halloween, and no one should feel pressured to do so.

True but if she wasn't scared no more then why did she go back to her hiding place? One can run from what scares you but one can only do it so long and then they have no choice but to face it and by at least not hiding she would've faced the same challenge of dealing with what scares her and be no worse off than being under her bed.. So I still cry foul even if I do understand her motive for not wanting to deal with the ""scary"" which really wasn't that scary... She was setting a bad sample.. It's one thing to not want to scare other ponies.. Quite another to keep being scared of every shadow and that is what she choice and for that reason I still think she could've found something about it she liked...

Maybe it might have been fun for her to spend the night reading that way, perhaps? Also notice in that scene, her window is open, rather than bolted shut. Don't you think that might say something?

Fluttershy isn't a wimp. Being afraid isn't 'wimpy'. It's actually pretty smart. Considering all the crazy stuff that goes on in Equestria I think having a night like Nightmare Night comes with a bit of risk. She's playing it smart.

When I saw this episode awhile back(for a reason they released it early on itunes) I thought it was alright. However as time went on I began to appreciate it.
I really adore the gags this episode had. The pranks she set up at the corn maze were pretty messed up and kind of extreme(The scene of the fake Granny Smith's corpse is eerily similar to that scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Not sure if it was intentional or not). I would honestly expect that from either Pinkie Pie or Rainbow Dash but Fluttershy? That's something you don't expect. Yeah she had help from Angel but still she willingly did it. And I really like way they used Flutterbat(despite being a costume) but what I love more is the twist and the build up to that twist.
The reasoning is that instead of being brave and facing her fears she instead admitted that Nightmare night isn't really her stuff. And that while she likes to hang out with the rest of the Mane 6 this particular activity on the other hand really wasn't her forte. And while she could willingly scare her friends she doesn't because she doesn't want to see them in stress(even if it's harmless) because she genuinely cares about how they feel. And the fact that she's now confident to say how she honestly feels is something I applaud the writters in doing.
And I have to admit I really laughed out loud at the way she drew the ghosts in the beginning. I mean an anime reference in MLP? I can understand movie references and they did a subtle joke at DBZ at one point but this? This actually impressed me. I mean they referenced Ranma 1 1/2, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Revolutionary Girl Utena and Evangelion! Maybe the writters of MLP are huge anime fans or maybe Fluttershy is a weaboo which it would make sense and since she knows a lot of dress making maybe she could be a cosplayer.
So yeah this episode actually impressed me.

I gotta say I was really surprised that Fluttershy actually doesn't join in with her friends simply out of disinterest. That's actually very mature. Honestly, I thought it was gonna be a predictatable and have Fluttershy join in on Nightmare Night from now on. That was pretty bold to just up and tell her friends that she just doesn't enjoy Nightmare Night. Expect a really positive review from me soon as I'd also like to talk about how well the moral was handled.

One of the best reviews in my opinion that I have seen you do. I completely agree with it. I have one personal disappointment with the episode though. Luna was not in it. She did not have to play an important part. It would have been nice to just see her in the background doing something with other background ponies. It's a minor gripe but afterall it is her night. Now for the things that truly warmed my heart. The extremely cute way they showed Flutters from the back side a few times. So cute. I also liked some of the costumes background ponies were wearing. Like the one dressed as Queen Chrysalis and the pony in the maze dressed like Twilight. Big kudo's for the way Spike was portrayed in this episode too. He was honest and caring with Flutter Shy and did not end up the fall guy for once! My rating A.

Wait, Fluttershy didn't turn into Flutterbat? It was just a costume? INSTA F!!!!
In all seriousness, though, I agree with what you said. I was expecting Flutters to just get over her fear of the holiday, but having her decide it wasn't her thing and her friends supporting her decision - ie, not caving in to peer pressure, even if it's for a good reason - was quite a good message for kids. ^^

Pretty good episode I must say. Last time we have had a good episode where it is Fluttershy focus was Hurricane Fluttershy. But instead of doubt, it's fear. And an episode where it is featured on Halloween. But why would you feature a Halloween episode after a Christmas episode? Doesn't really make a lot of sense. Oh well.
I give this episode an A. It was good but I wish Luna would make a cameo appearance. Besides, Nightmare Night should have Dracula's castle or a reference to it the next time we get a Nightmare Night episode. Sure there was a moment here and there for awkwardness but nothing really out of the blue.

Yup, They dropped the ball on that one point. Luna should have been seen somewhere in the episode. Maybe pulling Ditzy out of the apple bobbing tank in the background. Or making off with someponies bag of candy!

The bronies that hate certain episodes like Mysterious Mare Do Well, Keep Calm and Flutter on, Make New Friends but Keep Discord, etc. All have the dumbest reasons, if any at all. The one I hear the most is "X acted out of character" when it’s a fucking character development episode. And now some people are ragging on this episode because "she didn’t learn anything, she didn’t change"
Every time there's an episode with even a slightest amount of character development everypony starts whining about it being a bad episode or the moral sucked or the characters acted out of character.
This episode, for example, had a good moral for the show. Fluttershy tries to step out of her comfort zone and join her friends for nightmare night, she even references filli vanili, the other episode where she steps out of her comfort zone. She tries her hardest to have fun with her friends but she’s not used to being a part of nightmare night so she decides that her friends will have more fun without her after-all.
cue angel bunny segwaying us into the last act of the episode, and even though flutterhsy succeeds in scaring her friends very well, she doesn’t like seeing her friends being in danger, even though she knows she’s in control of the situation. It goes against her character to make another pony un-duly upset.
Now In can see where people can take issue, it’s like, why go though all that effort of scaring them just to go back on it at the last second. But it’s the fact that she she stepped of her comfort zone, tried something new, and decided "you know what, I don’t like that after-all, I don’t want to do that anymore" – which is a very normal way to react to a new experience.
See? It makes sense in the context of the episode, so I don’t know what all these others are on about.
This fucking fandom sometimes.

Here here! Flutters did learn a lot in this episode. She learned to try something that scares her and the biggist thing she learned is how to be assertive and not cave in to what everypony else wants to do or likes.

What's even funnier is that was also the message of Nightmare Before Christmas, and somehow lots of people caught onto that yet didn't see it here. (Okay, some people saw it as a 'you should be yourself' message, but I come across those people less)
