Oh, it was all spectacular! It was a musical just like Magical Mystery Cure, we finally saw a side of Diamond Tiara that isn't pure evil, the CMC finally got their Cutie Marks, we finally got in-show confirmation that Ma and Pa Apple are gone, & it's all woven together with some of the best writing I've ever seen on this show!

Aside from the cutie marks, my favorite parts were Silver Spoon FINALLY telling Diamond Tiara off and Diamond Tiara FINALLY getting her shit together!

I'd have to STRONGLY agree with you, five years we watched and waited for the CMC to get there marks and many times they failed(while learning from it) and I thought I'd never see it during this season. I'm glad I was wrong on that, I've never been more happy for them to GET there marks, this episode was good but the second time I watched it I loved it even more. I have to give this episode a 10/10.

Didn't really have too many expectations going into this one (I find CMC episodes to be somewhat hit and miss and while in prior seasons they were more "hit", this season I found them more "miss". "Brotherhooves Social" being the exemption). But as soon as the first song started in the teaser I knew I was in for a good one. And then the development for Diamond Tiara and her songs were just perfect.
This has definitely made it into my top eps this season (beaten only by "Slice of Life", "Amending Fences" and "Make New Friends, But Keep Discord"). I'd say a great episode that was made better because I didn't have any real expectations of it (especially not that ending).

I think the ending is really what pushed the episode into such esteemed territory. Those last 6 or 7 minutes were very moving.

That ending is what really rocked the episode. Not only does it show how passionate the CMC are about their destiny, but also how far everypony in the show has come. 10/10.

I really enjoyed the songs and the story was really good too. Β At first I thought my disdain for Diamond Tiara would intensify, but after watching the episode, all of it faded away. Β Also, seeing the Cutie Mark Crusaders finally get their cutie marks made me so happy for them. Β It's like they found their place in the Circle of Life.
I really loved the episode, and I'm so curious to see what happens with the CMC next.

I think the episode worked very well because it accomplished so much in the space of 20 minutes - from Diamond Tiara reforming to the whole cutie mark attainment. The future for the characters will be quite different now they're focusing on helping others :')

It just that after so much character development, everything just came to a disappointing conclusion that seems as if it was done simply for the chance to sell toys or sow the seeds for a spin-off.
I understand that it's possible that they were ignoring what we so clearly thought were their true talents, but I just can't accept that their destinies are to help otherΒ ponies who have a misunderstanding of their own talents. It seems silly to think that it is even possible for a pony to get their cutie mark and not even really know what it is for.

I think the point the episode was trying to make is that they get their cutie marks finally because they stop worrying about getting them. From the very beginning they've been advised to just let things happen naturally but they've instead focused on trying various things specifically to earn their marks. In this episode they accept that they need to help others rather than themselves, and that's what makes them succeed when in the past they've failed.
It's a shame you didn't enjoy this one - I'm quite the cynic, but I don't personally think this was a case of making them get their marks to sell toys or launch a spin-off.Β

I see what you're saying but in that same token, think about the "Show Stoppers" episode, when we are first introduced to their talents. They were each alone and focused their efforts on their current task. They weren't concerned with earning their marks, they were just living in their own moments. Isn't there a saying that you show your true self when you are alone?

I imagine because that was an early season they didn't want them to get their marks too quickly.
Thinking about it, today was the 5th anniversary of the show airing, so perhaps they tied the cutie marks in with that.
