I still love Sailor Moon, I still love the Power Puff Girls, I still love Generator Rex (an AWESOME show that only lasted for three years and was pretty much ignored in the first place), I still love Kingdom Hearts, Adventure Time, Invader Zim, and many other things that have come and gone. And even though I may not have someone to share it with, I will always be apart of this fandom. "We may never meet again, but we'll never forget each other." - Leon from Kingdom Hearts, and that's how I truly feel about the shows I love. As long as one person remembers a show fondly, there will always be a fan.

It'll make a comeback years from now, like Transformers and TMNT (yeah, I know, crappy movie adaptations by Michael Bay, but hear me out). The reason why these shows have been revamped time after time is because people remember them. Not just because they were popular, but because they were good. That's why it's always better to be good than popular, because once people grow out of a franchise and move onto the next popular thing, there has to be something of substance to bring them back.
Of course, I can't speak for everyone who's a big fan of MLP, especially the overly obsessed ones. But there are some things you don't go over board with, like tattoos or fan art that took you a lot of time to make.

Anyway, I find it hard to believe that anyone would "forget" the names of the main characters, especially if they were a hardcore fan.Β
And depending on how the show's popularity and "pop culture" presence persists, even the young'uns of the future will probably be at least somewhat familiar with the G4 characters, much like how young Star Wars fans of today are familiar with the original trilogy, even though it is likely a generation or two before their time.

It has enough presence on the internet that people are both praising it and/or criticizing it in significant numbers; or at least neutrally acknowledging its existence.Β
It's had at least two documentaries made about it.
It has an ongoing sociological study focusing on it.
It's proven time and again to have a life of it's own with all the blogs, fan productions and sub-communities that have come out of it, such that even if the show itself was cancelled tomorrow, it will likely still persist for quite some time.
So yeah, it's significant enough that it easily qualifies as a social "phenomenon".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I actually think what you're questioning here is whether bronies are a phenomenon that have had, or will have, any notable or lasting influence on our culture as a whole, or whether they are just a passing fad that will be forgotten in time.Β On that point, I am also not sure, though the fandom is continuing to evolve, if not necessarily growing by leaps and bounds anymore.
I think rather that the brony phenomenon is a symptom of a much broader social shift wherein more people are questioning traditional values and gender roles.Β To some degree, bronies are a rebellion against traditional male gender roles, but more so just an assertion that guys should feel free to express their interests in any way they wish, without fear of being ridiculed or disrespected for not fulfilling the "expectations" of the culture.
That's still a tough pill to swallow for many "criticizers" out there who would rather stick to the more "comfortable" traditional values, and try to stamp out any such change.Β Bronies, as an extreme example, become undeniable in their diversity and, at times, their overwhelming presence, such that this new view of masculinity can gain faster acceptance.Β
It's social progress, I say.Β And again, I wouldn't necessarily say that bronies are "causing" this social change, but they are a symptom of it, and are facilitating it through their various activities.Β
