Hm... Never thought of doing it that way. When I'm really going for a realistic eye, what I do for the iris is make a circular marque tool; fill it with color; add a monochromatic, gaussian noise; and pinch and twirl a few times. Everything is done in the selection so the pinching a twirling are in the center of the iris.
It's really cool to see it done in different ways.

this is actually helpful and i has ideas...sketch and color in photoshop then shade in gimp it works! *actually dunno, drawin right now n i finished the pic of Whitefury but mah hand is dead*
