Description
Backwards engineering the Borg transwarp coil from sensor data and used up examples brought back from the Delta quadrant proved difficult to say the least. However, combined with years of research the result was the introduction of the Spiral Induction core. This warp core removed the need for dilithium entirely via a Borg inspired induction control matrix and as a result allowed for higher warp field frequencies (increased velocities) and provided a smooth efficiency curve. This meant that maintaining warp decimals, for example 4.6, was just as efficient as warp 4 or 5, up to and including the sometimes ridiculous need for decimals like warp 9.975 or 9.995. It could also handle brief transwarp bursts when used in conjunction with an advanced deflector array, though the vast speed increase largely negated the need, except in extreme emergency situations.A new warp equation based on the original was brought in to redefine the velocities to better reflect the new drive advances and reduce the use of extensive decimals at high warp speeds.
Original equation: warp factor^3 x c (speed of light)
TNG era: 1 = light speed, 2-9 = writers discretion, 10 = infinite.
New equation: warp factor^6 x c (speed of light)
