I don't know, a single entry for system settings/control panel seems rather fitting for the session menu to me. Though the crowded out monstrosity that is emerging from development of Ubuntu 11:10 looks hideous to me (surely bluetooth settings belongs in... well, the bluetooth indicator menu?!).

No, just what I thought made sense in that 15 minutes. I don't know what Gnome Shell's session options look like.

It's similar to Gnome Shell. Here's a screen: [link]
Similarities aside, it's much more simple than the one in Ubuntu, and in this case that's a very good thing.

The only real similarity I see is in the menu style (which isn't new for me. I've used this menu style for a while) and the session options at the bottom. They don't account for fast user switching, and I don't supply settings or availability. The substance of the menu is quite different.

Having that arrow is impossible right now, right?

as far as I know, it's not currently possible. I think having little arrows on menus would make it lot easier to see what they relate too though.

Hmm, the panel already shows clearly what the menu relates to I think.

Very pretty though. I'm sad to be using Ubuntu over this, but it just has better support for things. Perhaps in your next release I'll switch, but I'll be watching Elementary's progress very closely regardless.

Can you elaborate on "better support for things"?

Yes. A few downloadable games that used .sh files to launch weren't running, as well as the Ren'Py Editor, which was just refusing to launch. It was having a lot of trouble with launching .sh files for applications in general, both from the Software Center and otherwise. I typically use my laptop to work on my game, and switched quite quickly after this happened, since all of the tools I need were launched through .sh files, as was the game itself.

That menu style is fantastic. If this is what we can expect from Luna I may have to consider converting wholesale to elementaryOS (instead of simply overhauling my Ubuntu install with elementaryOS applications).

Probably not in Luna. Rounded menus don't yet work in GTK3, neither does opacity like this, and I don't think menus can have arrows to their parent either. So the tech isn't quite there yet

Well in that case, I'll abandon elementaryOS forever and ever and ever.
In all seriousness though, I am giving serious thought to defecting in time for Luna. I'm not fond of the direction Canonical is taking with Unity.
Incidentally, could arrows (to parents) ever be viable in GTK3? Are there plans to that effect?

To be honest I'm not sure if that's part of the plan in GTK. I know it's something that occurs in GNOME Shell and it's being made more popular in the mobile space. I would really like to see it on the desktop.

Is Qt able to do all of this? and why you (or elementary project) choose Gtk instead Qt?

You should. elementaryOS is much snappier.

it takes a lot of skills to design the obvious. nice work.
ubuntus recent big changes in that indicator are a bit nonsense. I always clean that menu the most I can on a fresh install, not clutter it with different functions.

Nice. But the does style matche the style of the dropdowns by other indicators?

DanRabbit In reply to satya164 [2011-07-26 06:53:32 +0000 UTC]
indeed, it's just a standard menu. (That I hope will soon become possible to draw as mocked in GTK)

Gnome Shell's style is very similar. Is it possible to use Gnome Shells notification area instead of Ubuntu's Indicators?

No, Wingpanel only supports indicators.

I think Log Out should be grouped with the users, since logging out is more closely related to switching user than to shutting down.
But that's my opinion.
