I do not think tim cook approve.

Do you want to launch it on Google nexus?

The last time it took 2 years for a ubuntu12.04 with gnome neutered (called pantheon)

Nexus comes out every year, upgrades RIL, Radio, Firmware are very frequent .....

If you use ubuntu touch, you'll have a lot of trouble with MIR

Ubuntu touch is full of bugs on Nexus, you should do the debugs before ubuntu and then pantheon? :-D I would like to see ahahahahah

if you use the same time you will be ready for the Nexus 4, but in the market there will be the nexus 8

Do you want to use the android platform? even worse

Android is updated assiduously

So... the stuff on the left at the top is what's 'outside' of the phone, and the stuff on the right is what's in the phone? Like, external networks on the left, internal device features on the right?

I'm just not sure if there was some concrete logic outside of the need for visual balance- I'm interested on your thoughts, although it's merely a (good-looking) concept.

What happens when someone is calling and I just want to unlock? (For example to check something quickly before answering the call.) Or maybe you never do stuff like this with smartphone, because in practice you don't need to? (IDK, I don't have a smartphone.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to elgregorPL [2013-06-08 17:19:19 +0000 UTC]

Well, I mean you can continue the call while you do other things (at least you can on iPhone). So you could answer the call and then immediately switch to another app to check whatever you wanted to check.

I wonder how easy to figure out that slide to unlock is. What if there was like a line pulsing in the direction of the unlock options?

DanRabbit In reply to BassUltra [2013-06-13 04:05:45 +0000 UTC]

I just played with an HTC First and it seems like its actually pretty natural to do. They have the icons kind of "shoot out" of the unlock icon.

DiGi59404 [2013-06-01 10:35:51 +0000 UTC]

So when do we start coding this? Luna +1?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to DiGi59404 [2013-06-01 22:50:27 +0000 UTC]

There's a lot of work that needs to happen upstream (in Gtk) and downstream (in Pantheon) before this could happen. I'd say a more realistic plan would be:

Luna +1: Make desktop touch rock. Stuff like 1:1 multi-touch for switching workspaces, pages in slingshot, back/forward gestures, pinch-to-zoom, long-press context menus, etc. Likely we'll have to purchase multi-touch trackpads (like the ones from Logitech or Apple) for our core devs that don't already have multi-touch.

Luna +2: Make elementary work on tablets. This means making sure everything is touch friendly, really focusing on performance and battery life, making sure we have the apps that tablet users expect like maps and camera, creating an installation method for mobile devices, etc. Likely we'll have to purchase a device like the Nexus 10 for a number of our core devs.

Luna +3: Start work on phone, expanding the work done on tablet. We'll have to decide how exactly we do mobile app UI, whether we have two different app stores or have apps use some kind of responsive design. We need to make sure we have a calls app and sms. Gala (if this OS uses Gala) will have to provide a vastly different mobile mode. etc etc.

Where does X.Org/Mir/Wayland fit into all that? I guess that is not really a deviantart question, but hey.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to CameronNemo [2013-06-06 00:22:29 +0000 UTC]

At the moment, the most likely situation is we follow upstream (Gtk) and go with Wayland. But if we get to the turning point and it seems that Mir is a better option, I don't see why we couldn't adopt that. It just depends on which project is more mature when the time comes.

You should use that battery icon on elementary icons

DanRabbit In reply to LuxieBlack [2013-06-01 22:51:07 +0000 UTC]

If we go through with writing new indicators for Luna +1, we'll be able to update all the icons to new smaller symbolic versions.

Why not merge wireless and wifi indicators, put them on the other side, then create an "Apps" button/item on the left? If you don't like merging them, at least get rid of the little cell tower to save width.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to CameronNemo [2013-06-01 06:54:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure that an "applications" button really works on a phone. It'd be really tiny and corners are not really great targets for touch. Not to mention this is right above where the "back" button is in many mobile apps. It would just be all kinds of mis-clicks.

Wireless and cell signal are important information independent of each other. Having wifi doesn't mean your call won't drop from bad signal. As you can see, there is a lot of room ovr there on the left side, so I'm not terribly concerned with space. I think including the tower ensures that the icon is clear

G4Man2 In reply to G4Man2 [2013-05-31 17:20:57 +0000 UTC]

I like how with the single message from cassidy it shows his picture. But I think something similar should be implemented for the twitter notifications too. Since there are multiple notifications You can't really use a single face and not multiple because that could stack up, but what about just making the unlock to twitter icon colored? give it that blue icon background and possibly make the twitter logo white

The curved back will make it difficult to work on if it lies flat on a table (swiping on a see-saw).

It looks neat - but if it's imagined in iPhone size, then it's too small

zeeeeee [2013-05-30 09:18:26 +0000 UTC]

great stuff, but the usual slider to answer or reject a phone call is a smart way of not answering phone calls by mistake while you're trying to get your phone out of your pocket.

G4Man2 In reply to zeeeeee [2013-05-30 22:38:32 +0000 UTC]

I think the 3 lines on the side of both buttons may represent that to answer or reject you slide the button up.

zeeeeee In reply to G4Man2 [2013-05-30 23:57:38 +0000 UTC]

I thought about that possibility, but I believe Dan wouldn't spare a directional indicator if that was the case.

G4Man2 In reply to zeeeeee [2013-05-31 00:35:03 +0000 UTC]

If not to indicate that they're sliding buttons then I'm clueless as to why he put them there.. and if they don't signify that they're sliding buttons they should be removed to avoid confusion.

elgregorPL In reply to G4Man2 [2013-05-31 16:53:08 +0000 UTC]

Based on Dan's comments on SoD's design, I guess it's some kind of menu. Like "Answer with audio only", "Reject, but set reminder to phone back", etc.

G4Man2 In reply to elgregorPL [2013-05-31 17:09:03 +0000 UTC]

Hmm I like that, it's clever. But what ~zeeeeee said is true. it should be slide to answer.

spiceofdesign [2013-05-30 07:23:31 +0000 UTC]

I like your app switching screen, but how will you deal with scaling? When apps are scaled to that size they get very blurry very quickly, but cropping at this size would just show a small area which doesn't really show the user anything. Maybe what would be useful would be smart previews with data such as unread counts etc.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DanRabbit In reply to spiceofdesign [2013-05-30 07:53:29 +0000 UTC]

Yea I think we'd probably have to see how many apps you can realistically show on the screen and then we'd have to have pages after that. The icons should help in making sure you can still identify a window.

That's a really interesting idea! So we'd show badges and progressbars in the window overview.. hmm very interesting indeed.

DanRabbit In reply to TheVirtualDragon [2013-05-30 06:37:26 +0000 UTC]

if you mean on the hardware itself, I'd like the phone to be comfortable to use with just one hand. So I don't want any controls too close to the palm or you'd have to bend your thumb really awkwardly.
