Description
"In the Lay of EΓ€rendil is many a thing sung of his adventures in the deep and in lands untrodden, and in many seas and in many isles; but Elwing was not with him, and she sat in sorrow by the mouths of Sirion.", J.R.R.Tolkien, "The Silmarillion"I totally messed up my own idea (for I first wanted to make it in a dry graphic style, then I decided to turn it into a watercolour, then I disliked the result and tried to bring some bettering by applying pastels... So there's no wonder I'm disappointed by the result.)
Well, let's hope it will be my chance to learn thanks to my own mistakes

sad.....it reminds me of a story ending where it was the family that died not the man..............
but great job on the artwork!

Another sunset, another day passed without Earendil. Or is he coming home? Or is he leaving yet again? Your picture has this very melancholy air to it, because even when Earendil returns (my memory might be wrong - was he always away? Or did he leave and come back again numerous times?), it's only a matter of time of when he goes back out again.

It's still beautiful! I love the silhouettes of Elwing and the twins, and the seagulls. I've imagined this a lot and find something that does it justice... great job!

This is a very powerful image. I love the lighting in it and the composition is oddly soothing, even if it feels sad. Beautiful

Outstanding I really like the light and the water texture. Also, the gulls are so lifelike (their wings seem a bit too broad to me for a gull though, but I can be mistaken). ...

With how much you used on it, it has a kind of rough feel that helps to evoke the sorrow Elwing felt. I love it.

This is beautiful. I especially like that her hair and dress are blowing in the wind off the ocean...it makes it seem more real and sad, somehow.
I'm not surprised to read that this was inspired by a loss. I, too, go to the Silmarillion for comfort in times of grief. Tolkien weaves sorrow into all of his tales, and yet there is beauty in the sorrow, and the world is richer for it having been.

Yes, I opened the mixing of so much different medias to myself, and highly recomment it to others!

I like how you add the pastel, not blurry, but strongly textured.

This is one of the most gorgeous pictures of Elwing I've seen! I really love the light, you really captured the image of a sunset. I also love the silhouettes & shadows of Elwing and the children. They have a very graceful and lonely feel.
Actually, I'd like to ask permission to use this picture as "cover art" for an Elwing fanmix that I'm making, similar to the fanmixes you can see here: [link] Of course I would give credit to you as the artist and give a link to this deviantart page. If you gave permission I'd be really happy, but if you don't want me to use it I understand.

Wow, this is so beautiful! I'm impressed with the simplicity and realism of it, looks very warm and inviting. I love the shadows cast on the sand, and the birdies flying around and making the scenery livelier. There are a couple of strange things around it, because of the media mix - like the unevenness of the sand (like the light of the sun on the sand seems to be done with pastels while the rest with watercolours), but it looks good altogether! And impressive to know it was done without references!

I personally like the effect of noticeable mixed media. I am not an artist, but passionate about strong visual images and slick perfection is less emotionally affecting for me.

Thank you very much!
Yes, most of the mistakes are caused by the mixture of media, I think.. Or by my clumzy hands
But - umm - I didn't say I haven't used references! ) I did
I often do, I usually look through many photos of places (or time) that I want to draw, and try to see how it might look and how it would be better to draw it exactly. I'm not so good to work totally without them

Haha, I see. But it still looks very nice considering!
About the references, I just assumed you hadn't because a lot of people here don't (which still surprises me a lot). I can't work without them either, although I'm moving away from copying exact references to start designing stuff from my head instead.

It depends, actally. It's easy to draw a simple pose witha a simple perspective, but when it comes to dynamics and unusual angles - it takes much experience to make it right.
I do not use them always, and I always first make sketches of what I want to make, and then - if I feel unsure about the pose or the background - I try to look through photos, where the thing I need is well-seen. Very often, when I can't find what I need, I just sit berofe the mirror in a pose I need, and make scetches - and then ajust the figure to what I need.

Well, I think it's beautiful I love the gentle orange light - and the ship sailing into (or out of) the sunset. And the way the light catches the birds' feathers is just perfect.
You've really captured the longing in Elwing's pose... and the shadows lead the eye into the picture perfectly. I think you've done a great job!
