It depends on how complex the color is whether you need a lot of points or not. And you can use the lasso tool to select a bunch of points... but the color often is so very slightly different that I really just do point by point to get it right. I did that on the little girl gradient mesh.. took me about ten hours to finish her

Its not hard at all... just time consuming
