I did not find this helpful, I found it SUPER helpful. Thank you SO much! I reached the coloring stage of a family project I am the artist of, and I am still completely new to computer coloring. This great tutorial gave me the foundation!

It's a great tutorial, but the correct spelling is "complementary" colors, not complimentary. Otherwise, very nice work; it's very helpful to those of us who are color idiots.

Thanks!! I think this will help a lot.
The only question I have is about complimentary colors.... you explained tinting the shadows and highlights, but do you ever directly mix a complimentary color into the shadows/highlights?

I've read all sorts of coloring tutorials but never really understood much what the writer was telling me.
This tutorial on the other hand has been very helpful, and your detailed explanation really came through.
Thank you so much for this!

Hey! I really liked the tutorial, especially the "darker color, less saturated" bit etc. Very helpful And I'm gonna try it out right away XD
But you're using the wrong color theory. The primary colors aren't blue, red and yellow but Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. (Notice you can't mix magenta with red and blue?). Secondary colors are therefore red, blue/violet and green. It's a common mistake, and if I hadn't had to writte a 30 page paper about it a few weeks back I probably wouldn't know either I'm not trying to be a smartass here, it just burned into my brain XD

This one has the right primary colors

XD it's actually accurate but only for traditional media - i was raised doing oil paints so I wasn't aware the primaries were different for computer color theory when I wrote the tutorial XD I just haven't had the chance to go back and edit it yet :3

I dont know if you know much about the topic but could you cover maybe this in relativity to other objects in a painting? Ex. Like how saturation and value and heaviness effects which objects come out and recede and maybe the difference in shading hard and soft light?

I have a question. On your other tutorial about painting, you say to pick three shadow tones: one darker and more saturated, one darker and less saturated, and one much darker and more saturated. This tutorial, however, states that it should be one darker and more saturated, one darker and less saturated, and one much darker and much less saturated. Which selection is correct?

DarlingMionette In reply to Shattered--Stars [2011-06-03 20:46:32 +0000 UTC]
both are correct, as long as there's some saturated dark tones and some less saturated dark tones XD i just change my opinion frequently as I try out new techniques ^^ Most days now I only work with three tones, mid, dark, and highlight. It's just a personal preference. The important part is that for most of your saturated tones to be in the mid and mid-dark ranges, and everything else less saturated

Thank you for adding an explanation of how saturation affects the colors to your tutorial. Most tutorials skip that and it ends up feeling like there's a piece missing!
