There's a color between orange and magenta that is sort of orange-magentaish, but it really doesn't look like red to me?

no idea, the red in the top 2 circles and in the primary colors list is fine. The orange in the secondary colors list though is very washed out and yellow orange to me, hardly any different than the yellow above it. now I'm going to have to play with it and see if there are any color adjustments to be done..

This thing is golden if for no other reason than the shadows and highlights section. For ages I've just been using the Variant slider to make a darker shade of the color for shadows--and now I gloriously know it works better with saturation. Hurrah! Thank you so much for that.

That was very helpful, thank you indeed! You're right, there's tons of colour theory out there, but that's where it usually stays - theory. I have steeples of hand-coloured colour wheels from art class, and they were nothing but a passtime, to be honest. Your hints concerning saturation and hue are so much more useful than all of that. Thanks heaps!

haha truer words were never spoken XD I find DeviantART is a lot more helpful than artschool though :3 and a lot more productive. You learn exactly what you want to learn at a pace you want to learn it at. Achievement is equal to the time you put into learning.

Ahh, this is excellent, actually. It really does give some good insight into colour theory. One thing I would like to ask though is regarding the part where you explain choosing the saturation levels for your lighter and darker tones... You never really clearly state whether the lightest and darkest tones will still be more saturated than your base colour or if somewhere along the line the saturation drops below the original level. How you handle them seems a little more apparent with the highlights, but it would still be a little nice to hear some clarification on it.

DarlingMionette In reply to Houkou-NRL [2012-01-10 15:25:38 +0000 UTC]
yah for some reason during that section of tutorial my brain flew out the window. generally when I work the lighter half of the palette dips to be a little more saturated than the base color, and then back over to the de-saturated side of things, and the darker half of the palette does the same - think of it like a strange z, with the base color being mid-way down the middle line of the z., the mid-range of colors in your palette (base color and the next lightest and darkest) are the most saturated in your palette, all the others are less saturated EXCEPT the very deepest of the darks which is also saturated (it adds a bit of interest to the deep shadows :3 )
