Description Wheeeeeee another tutorial This time on custom brushes in SAI! <3 I love custom brushes. It was getting so long that I tourniquet'd my custom brush settings off of it >.> But if anyone sees a brush exampled up there that you'd like, just ask and I'll copy the stats for you

ENGLISH SAI: [link]
Official Website: [link]

SAI costs approximately $56 USD (5250 Japanese Yen) for a license. Trials last 31 days. Check the exchange rates on your currency - they change daily so it can fluctuate up and down.

[link] <- Custom Brush Suppliment Tutorial. Has all my brush settings.

===========================================
NOTE: This deviation is a little outdated. You can now download "DarlingMionette's SAI Resources" at the bottom of the Custom Brush Supplement.

It is a .zip file of all my brush settings, textures, blank do-it-yourself resources, instructions for creating custom content, and associated start-sai.exe file that lets you register these files to your SAI without editing the .conf files manually :3 All in one convenient place. All of my current brush settings have been updated to match the files in the .zip file, and contain image examples for each. Be sure to read the README's! If you like it, then drop me a +fav on this deviation . Thanks!

Did that already. It's weird though, the only texture that don't work out of the whole thing are the ones that are in all lowercase. All the ones with the odd names and the capital first letter work. I tried renaming a few to start with uppercase and it didn't fix it.

How do u get them into sai?I downloaded them but now what?x.x

DarlingMionette In reply to SpectrAbyss [2011-02-01 00:21:00 +0000 UTC]

note that the download is only TEXTURES not brushes, which you can put into the correctly named folders, and register with the start-sai.exe file, or manually edit the .conf files.

Sorry in advance since I'm sure you've answered this probably a million times but I have an English version of Sai (version 1.1.0) (its a valid version) and I cannot find the do-it-yourself file. I've searched in the other files and I cant find that template. All I can see are the templates for the other two brushes (in the elemap file; bristle and flat bristle). Please help!
Your tutorial is great, I just have a problem with this

DarlingMionette In reply to ariand [2011-01-31 01:49:06 +0000 UTC]

it seems it depends on the version you have XD some sai's come with it, some don't o.O not sure why that is, but if you google up "english sai" you'll find the english patch site. if you download the english patch, it comes with those files ^^

The English Sai download isn't just a free trial is it? It's like a permanent program right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to DragonAnimeParty [2011-01-15 18:55:55 +0000 UTC]

no, its the trial plus the full english patch ^^, though if you already have the non-english trial or the full program, it'll just patch it to english for you

Okay, just making sure. I didn't want to loose the program. Thanks ^^

Ok, so ignore my earlier comment, I found the folder in the download file *facepalm*. But there isn't a do-it-yourself folder, or a start-sai button. Everything else is there, though. Figure it will show up when I get the license?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to Maria-Arnt [2011-01-15 05:33:37 +0000 UTC]

well im not sure about the do it yourself folder, but you can get the start-sai.exe by patching it with the english patch (if you google "SAI english" it'll be the first entry)

Maria-Arnt In reply to DarlingMionette [2011-01-15 05:39:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well I figured out how to do it the old-fashioned way, entering stuff on the notepad file thingy. I'm a patient person so it doesn't bother me much ^^.

I'm having a little trouble recreating some of your brushes, though... some of the files have interesting weird-symbol names and I can't find the corresponding textures or papers. I've figured out the copic one ok, but I'm still totally stuck on the speckle brush. I can't seem to find the right combination. *shrug*

Maria-Arnt In reply to ??? [2011-01-14 19:50:13 +0000 UTC]

Just downloaded this program today, and I gotta say I don't think I'll ever use anything else ever again lol. It's got all the best aspects from Painter, Photoshop and Manga Studio (well, I'll probably still use Manga Studio for actual graphic novel pages, but I'll probably be importing my art lol).

However, I can't find the folders you were talking about to add brushes and textures. Mind you, I've only got the trial download at the moment, I haven't bought the license yet, so that might be part of the problem. As it is now, I only have a start menu shortcut, which just opens the program. I can't find where any of the program files are. Where did you find yours?

I really enjoyed the tutorial cause it took me a while to figure out how to do custom tools. Something I would like to add about the quality though, is that there is a noticeable difference when you don't press down so hard. When you look closely when it's on the '1' setting it looks like you started a line and then there's little 'bubbles' in it. Where as when you have it on '4' it is much smoother and looks like one clean line. It's much prettier but you wouldn't notice it pressing down hard XD I don't know if you noticed it or not. I was just trying to help :'3

thanks for the info! mine doesn't do the same thing >.< but im sure it may vary from computer to computer

Xakirmeh In reply to DarlingMionette [2011-01-01 22:01:09 +0000 UTC]

it probably does. Or it might also be tablet type. I don't know... ALSO can I by chance get some of those brushes you made? I made my own brush but when I went to the 'do it yourself' folder, the file was a photoshop and right now I don't have photoshop unfortunately ):

Xakirmeh In reply to DarlingMionette [2011-01-07 07:23:22 +0000 UTC]

haha I do too. :'3 usually it's on the computer more than just in general and that seems to be the case this time too. I'm hoping by drawing more on paper for a bit, I'll be able to get more in the spirit for the computer :'3 plus, it'll be easier with the commissions I have coming up a friend has asked me to draw the pictures for his book and I was told the prices could go up to 300 overall. I'm really excited because I'll finally become a published artist though I know there are better artists than me who don't get as appreciated, and, not to sound rude, but artists who haven't even gotten to their better potential who are getting MORE appreciated. But at the same time, the less appreciated at first, I think the more people push themselves... I'm rambling... I'm sorry haha

thank you haha. I just got my computer back up and running though so I'll be getting back on my art soon. I drew a picture in my sketch book that I'm really proud of and I want to scan it so I can start painting it... only problem is, is I suck at grass :\ I get soooo lazy. but I think I got it this time.

I have a question, do you have any interest in rps? or do you know what that is? if not I would be happy to explain

DarlingMionette In reply to Xakirmeh [2011-01-07 14:06:56 +0000 UTC]

once you click start-sai, and it loads the brushes for you, can you use the normal sae.exe?( Just curious because I use sai.exe)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to weehee244 [2010-12-20 14:12:33 +0000 UTC]

they aren't custom brushes, so they won't show in the brush boxes XD <- gets this question a lot. they are brush textures and shapes - so they'll show up in those respective boxes :3
