it may be because you have a different version that i do it seems that they vary greatly from one version to another. .sai -should- save your layers as long as you aren't merging them down before hand, but it's automatic, so i'm not sure how to help D:

it might be because a) you have it turned off, or b) different version, they seem to vary a lot.

Hey I was wondering, you might not know but I am hoping you might lol. I cant find the new line art layer option. I know you said its above the layers pallet but would it be located anywheres else? I cant seem to find it ty!

DarlingMionette In reply to Jenilea01 [2010-04-24 18:49:28 +0000 UTC]
it should be mid-bar either on the left or right. sai lets you switch the location of your bar -_- so it can be confusing, but generally it's under the "preview" of your picture, above the layer list. Or you can go up to the menu Layers->New Linework Layer

Hey, you can rotate an image in Photoshop starting with CS4, just by pushing the R key. When you're done with your angle, then push escape and the image goes back to normal.

OMG I love you! In my experience to broaden my knowledge of paint programs I started using SAI.. like yesterday. I spent a few hours of doodling, setting up hotkeys, messing with all the options really, just playing around with it. And now I get the most kickass tutorial on it!

XD SAI = luff. It takes some getting used to, but it really makes cging and inking really easy. It also handles tablets better than photoshop >.> in my opinion. Deffinitately spend some time getting to know the tools and menu's it's a time saver.

i lub the tutorials! i'm thinking that i'd like to try to evolve from random doodles but don't have a tablet. do you have any you'd recommend getting?

I've only ever tried Wacom, but I do recommend them. I've had a Wacom Graphire, Graphire 2, and Graphire 4. I'm using the 4 right now. Now a days I believe the current of the same quality is a Wacom Bamboo. Mine's the standard 4x6 which is about the smallest they make - but i've never needed one any larger than that. The larger ones are only really needed if you're used to making very large strokes, or you like to "trace" sketched pictures directly atop the Wacom. Otherwise, the smaller one will work fine. One's like mine cost about $99 USD, sometimes less depending where you get them. Tablets = awesome, but they do take awhile to get used to (like one day) just because you have to train yourself to be able to look at the screen while you draw instead of watching your hand (like in traditional media), and it can feel sort of funny if you're used to turning your paper when you draw (because turning your Wacom will not turn your picture XD) I'm hoping to upgrade to an Wacom Intuos soon T_T (the main difference is it has more sensitivity levels - but honestly the bamboo works well even with less levels).

i have a 4X5 Bamboo tablet by wacom too; its what I was able to afford back in 2007. Tracing.. for bigger canvas or tablets I've seen others do that in my collage art classes back in fall 2008 I was pissed off not just that.. but the dam instructor allowed that. Where in the F* is the rawness of drawing sketching the work?
But.. I have yet have to try out the SAI I hear and seen a lot of others who own it and loved it. I have Adobe PhotoShop Elements 7.0. Nothing wrong with that. its just that I am missing out on the new materials and the painting out there making it look realistic & new methods of coloring tuts in here.
OK OK I stop now here LOL

I really enjoy SAI, and it's only like $55 something USD, really not that bad. the advantage of it over adobe photoshop is that it recognizes the wacom a lot better than photoshop does, the sensitivites are easier, and the strokes are more stabalized. I wouldn't dream of using photoshop again for painting XD I only ever use it for post-work anymore now that I have SAI.

I recommend it It has some things that it can't do as well as photoshop, but it beats out everything else i've tried as far as line-art tools go. I like to use both XD

Uhm. This is embarrassing...but I was having all of these confusing issues with SAI and I couldn't understand why I didn't have the curve tool, which was recommended to me a lot... and yeah. It's because I'm a ditz and didn't make a line-art layer! Wow! I've been doing all of my lines by hand! Thank you so much for posting this. You have just made my day 1000 times over!
