noo.... that's not the point I was getting at XD I was showing a really old crappy drawing i did to illustrate how you shouldn't draw hair. it looks fake and plastic and has no flow or movement to it - that is the point i was trying to illustrate.

I used to draw like that like 3 years ago

It took forever to even get as far as I have, so I would say I haven't done that much in improvement. D:

DarlingMionette In reply to Liloya [2010-08-03 16:40:21 +0000 UTC]

lol hey, any bit of improvement - is improvement. lol a few years ago I actually got worse at art -_- my old 2002 stuff is better than what I did in 06. it was a horrid year XD, but i'd like to think in the past few months i've made up for the deficit XD

Liloya In reply to DarlingMionette [2010-08-03 16:45:13 +0000 UTC]

It might have been something in the past that was effecting you.

That happened to me not too long ago.

It can effect your art dramatically, and even hinder you.

If this is true though, I'm sorry for whatever happened, but glad things are better.

I dont actually use a pentablet for my lineart XD sai has some really nice lineart features built in that work really well with just a mouse (so that's what i do) the coloring though I do use a pentablet, just because it's easier

I highly recommend them, they make art on the computer so much easier -but they do take some time to get used to XD its sort of an odd sensation to be staring at your screen and not your hand when you're drawing XD

'Yes, like every fan-girl i drew anime. This is an example as to why i stopped. LOL I suck at it.'

i want to emphasize that while generic/desu anime is bad, there's just too many styles in 'anime' to just judge. In fact, people may still view your style as anime believe it or not. There's obviously much better anime styles out there that use realistic features just like you. just thought i'd point that out. if you weren't indirectly saying anime was bad then i'm sorry to have disturbed you.

other then that, nice simple tutorial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to DA-Critique [2010-08-03 12:54:32 +0000 UTC]

thank you for commenting no anime isn't bad, but the fact that everyone feels the need to draw it is a little off-putting. I wasn't good at it, so I like to think that I evolved past the fan-art days and developed my own style.. which lies somewhere between anime and american comic. lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DA-Critique In reply to DarlingMionette [2010-08-05 05:05:13 +0000 UTC]

the main reason that being is because people just start straight off with the giant-eye desu anime style which definitly puts me off too, and it obviously isn't the greatest of sides of the actual style.

i'm sure the more professional manga-anime artists started with realism and studied anatomy/real-life before going with it.

but it's the same for any style that isn't realism/fine-arts. they just copy their favorite artist, be it anime, western, nick-toons, etc. i think we're all guilty of this and not just the anime artists.

and thank you replying.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to DA-Critique [2010-08-05 05:09:45 +0000 UTC]

we are, i'll agree, i think that's how people develop their style.. they pull a little bit as they go along from all their favorite artists - and eventually they end up with some kind of conglomeration that's all their own. But there are too many people out there today, I think, that don't even strive for their own style.. they just try to be like someone else - and doing that, they never learn. It's all well and good to be able to draw like some famous anime artist.. but if all you know is "a line goes here" then you don't understand any of the anatomy behind it XD.. and that's all you'll ever be able to do. that's what worries me about the current masses of copy-cat artists :/

DA-Critique In reply to DarlingMionette [2010-08-08 09:35:36 +0000 UTC]

i think it's perfectly okay to be inspired by others and stuff around us to find our -own- style, but unfortunately you are right about the copying. what's worse is the fact that many of these people think their style -is- original. of course i know no one can exactly mimic one's style 100%, but it's obvious when one is trying to copy.

i do want to believe it's just people being stupid or naive and hopefully they will realize what they are doing isn't that great and learn from their mistakes, but i will never truly know until the time does come.

yet another unfortunate thing is people who truly do believe they are drawing uniquely, but then there happen to be a few other (popular)artists that draw similarly - who they may or may not knew of. it's a shame when that's the case. sometimes they don't see the similarities, while others can. it's hard to tell who's right or wrong when that happens.

(i've seen a fair case of quite a few well known artists who happen to all be good friends but they all have rather similar styles; it's a but shady. some may agree some may not though.)

DarlingMionette In reply to DA-Critique [2010-08-08 14:16:41 +0000 UTC]

oh i completely agree. what really irks me is when an artist becomes popular and then suddenly there's about 20 other artists on da that have suddenly changed their styles to be just like them -_- and that poor original artist suddenly isn't very unique anymore. I hate vampire-stylists.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DA-Critique In reply to DarlingMionette [2010-08-17 01:33:35 +0000 UTC]

vampire stylists? what style would that be or am i better of not knowing?

But yep, you be right.. i seen so many non-anime styles like Disney-esque styles now that get copied. whenever i see them on front page i think it's THIS artist, but no, it's another artist, but hey they know each other anyways! only real differences would be perhaps coloring style or the way they do hands or some other part, but other then that it's like more then 80% similar in many regards. and then what irks me more is when those artists had like a diff style before the change (maybe they drew anime before) and then they sorta diss the style just cause their new one is oh so much better.. but that's just another story all together.

it's even more sad knowing how old these artists are too. i understand copying styles when you're a wee lad, but when you're 20+? and sometimes they be a snobby prick about it. double fail.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to DA-Critique [2010-08-17 01:41:13 +0000 UTC]

i completely agree -_- vampire stylists = people who "feed" off other's designs... be it character design, concept, or artistic style, they see something they want to "be just like" and they find a way to copy it, rather than think up their own original way of doing things. I coined a new term XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DA-Critique In reply to DarlingMionette [2010-08-17 07:01:07 +0000 UTC]

excellent term XD here's a cookie !

i personally love to lee-- i mean get inspired myself but i do get very cautious that i'm not totally ripping the person off and i try to change it as much as i can so that i won't be a copy cat since i don't want to be one as it is. :/ because everyone can get inspired by everyone and everything, it's just when you start copying someone where it becomes a bad thing. (i think i'm sounding like a broken record. please excuse me XD)

it's annoying to see them on front page all the time - and unfortunately it's often. Le sigh.

(i'm not sure if i double posted. DA is being a dork)
