Description
Sir Lancelot. Sort of vaguely based on the tale of the conquest of the castle Dolorous Guard, one of the old Round Table legends. Because King Arthur may have come from Wales or the Lake District, I've put a strong emphasis on landscape and atmosphere in this piece.Pencilled on regular A4 printer paper, inked digitally in Manga Studio and coloured in Photoshop. Time taken, I have no idea...what day is it? Where am I? Hahaha.

... can I ask, where did you find the Lancelot coat of arms? and how accurate do you think it is ?

Oh, on the shield? Interesting question. Well, It's not actually his coat of arms. If you read the myth of Dolorous guard, Lancelot is given aid in the form of an enchanted shield. Now, it's been like 2 years since I drew this, so I can't remember the details, but in the story, it was described as having 3 red stripes or something like that, each of which conferring a different benefit if I remember rightly. To compliment the shield, I did the rest of the character in red and white. The story is online; just google it.

It appears that this site on Arthurian Heraldry also depicts a similar shield, so three diagonal bands or red (or should I say 'gules'?) on a white ('argent', hehe) background seems to be the concensus, suggesting that after Dolorous Guard he kept this as his personal emblem of choice.
...of course, he's a fictional character in the end. Even if Arthur/Uther was based on an actual King in the Saxon era, Lancelot Du Lac was invented by a frenchman in the 12th Century, so there probably isn't an 'accurate' coat of arms for him really.

Thank you very very much!, I am doing a little research on the Arthurian characters to do a few illustrations and was finding it difficult to nail any kind of coat of arms but the three diagonals had appeared a few times, while we are on the subject can you suggest any good books with the legends for me to read?
Thank you again for your insight so far
Yours
Oliver.

I'm afraid I got all the info for this image off the internet. There are some pretty good sites on mythology online though, a favourite of mine being 'timeless myths'. It has a lot of information about a variety of mythology.

I've found it useful for a few illustrations and things. I don't really know any specific books, but there are probably an awful lot of them around. Try your local library, perhaps? The only really obvious books about Arthurian Legends that spring to mind are the story books, like 'La Mort D'Arthur' and 'The Once and Future King' (which is a children's book I have fond memories of, it was the basis for the Disney film 'The Sword in the Stone' I believe). They should be easy to get hold of.
I hope your illustration project goes well!

I like the idea you were going for here, but there's a few things holding this piece back.
I would strongly urge you to check out some landscape painting books as there's something a bit flat about this which destroys any feeling of atmosphere that you were going for. Something to help you combat this would be 'landscape painting' ([link] ).

Thanks for recommending books. This was drawn over a year ago though, and I like to think that I could do better now (I've been busy with paid artwork lately and not able to upload as much art as I'd like). Are you going to upload anything to your gallery?

Thanks. It did take a fair while. It was drawn about 9 months ago now, but I still remember that I completely lost track of how long it took!
The scenery is very much inspired by my home county ^_^

Suddenly, for some unknown reason, I contemplate weither or not a 5-ounce bird could carry a 1-pound coconut.

I like the outfit and the pose, but I can't shake this feeling like his right leg (the one nearest the viewer, as it were) is a little short... but it may just be me, and I don't really have any room to complain, given how I draw. >_>
Personally, I like Gawain and Tristram, but Lancelot's good, too.
And, depending on how dorky you wanna get, Sir Robin The Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot.

Yeah, I feel there are anatomical problems with this image, but wanted to finish it anyway because I like the atmosphere.

That's a good attitude to have, I think. Insecurity causes delays, heh.

The "castle" bit he is standing on almost look like the mouth of a stone dragon or something, which adds to the epicness I guess.
Oh Lancelot he was so cool.

haha, thanks. Lancelot was never my personal favourite as a kid. I used to like Galahad, but he's so good and pure that he's actually kind of boring, I guess, so Lancelot is cool, even though he is a wife-stealing jerk!

I always found him entertaining, though I've always been a fan of the really obscure minor knights. I can't even remember my real favorite... that is how obscure he is.
