The Tumbler is designed to climb stuff. KITT is lower to the ground and shaped like a ramp. A quick doge to side and the tumbler will barrel roll onto its roof.
KITT will drive away without a scratch.

I'm old enough that I was a teenager when the first series aired. Kitt was sucky then, he's sucky now, and the Tumbler would squish, crush and mangle both cars

It's my favourite series. Nothing can be better than it. I was five years old when I first saw it and it became my favourite in an instant. My life is bound to Knight Rider in many ways, it is my past, my present and my future.
As I am for class struggle (good old Commie me), I have always found that Knight Rider delivers this kind of message: the common people are in a constant threat by multinational companies, organised crime and corrupt government officials. And in the world of Knight Rider, there are a few people who make a stand against these evil people and help the "innocent, helpless and powerless". The real world needs something like Michael and Kitt too.

The original KITT was indestructible...dunno if you actually REMEMBER the show. The Tumbler is a product of more primitive technology and isn't indestructible - after all, it got blown up by a single, sucky RPG in "The Dark Knight," whereas Original KITT shrugged off heavy artillery like they were water balloons on more than one occasion.

Only because the SFX department couldn't afford to actually blow up or seriously damage the car itself.

They did that a couple of times, usually when someone had a laser or KITT got smashed up by a big rig (Goliath) which ALSO was indestructible. They had a special stripped-down KITT that they used for stunts or when KITT would get damaged.
It was written into the story that KITT was indestructible. Just because a car doesn't get damaged in a show doesn't mean the writers made it indestructible to explain that - most TV "star cars" don't get damaged (General Lee, etc), and they're just normal cars that you know COULD get smashed up - but they don't.
And that's all beside the point. The simple fact remains that KITT is indestructible, and the Tumbler isn't (as TDK so effectively showed us).
