I seriously think that we would be a hell of a lot closer to Star Trek Times if we had followed Tesla instead of Edison. Tesla wanted to help the world with his knowledge and technology, Edison just wanted to make a buck.

And the US government killed Tesla.

Tesla is one of my heroes! I'm just going to pretend this is a TOS patch.

Fuck Thomas Edison!!!

It's a pre-TOS path (a few decades before the Connies, I intended this to be the Kelvin's class' logo)

The Kelvin (if you want to accept it as canon...which is dubious, although believe it or not I'm almost accepting it as canon, although everything else non-TOS still isn't IMO) would be classified under the TOS classification system, which would be Class, Type rather than the TNG style "Class." In this case, it would doubtlessly be "Spaceship Class, Tesla Variant."

Unlike cars, "class" didn't mean the "model" of the ship, but the classification (like a truck, van, car, motorcycle, etc). Type/Variant is what you're looking for; ergo, the Enterprise was "Starship Class, Constitution-variant." I've explained this before, I think...

Okay, so this is Starship class, Tesla variant, then. It has Warp drive, I think that classifies it as Starship, not Spaceship...

Sounds good!!

I just assumed that the Kelvin would be classified as "Spaceship" rather than "Starship" because it's smaller, has less features, and isn't as specialized as a ship like the Enterprise, which is really a self-sufficient city in space.

The Kelvin is a bit wierd to classify IMHO. One nacelled ships are Scouts or Destroyers, but those have only a saucer unit and a single Warp unit. The Kelvin has a stardrive unit, but also just one Warp nacelle. It is a science ship, so has less weaponry than Scouts, Destroyers, Cruisers and Dreadnoughts (three nacelles), but it probably has more advanced sensors. It is probably less fast than cruisers and Dreadnoughts, I approximate a maximum speed of Warp 6, old scale.
I still think that the Kelvin is more Starship than Spaceship is because these science ships are sent to distant stellar systems for exploration. They probably need more backup than Cruisers and Dreadnoughts, but are still quite idependent from major Starbases et al.

One-nacelled ships are problematic also, because Gene Roddenberry himself said that ships need TWO nacelles in order for the warp drive to function in the first place - no more, and no less. Some think he said this specifically to de-canonize Franz Joseph's designs, which use an odd number of nacelles (one nacelle to three nacelles), but whatever Gene's reasons were, the fact remains that he said it.

The people behind ST-11 have said that the Kelvin actually has two rows of warp coils housed in one nacelle casing, so it essentially does have two nacelles - just mashed together. I think this is kind of a lame explanation, but it kind of works - barely.

What we don't really know (yet) is exactly what the Kelvin is used for; is it a Scout, Destroyer, or a Science vessel like the Enterprise? One thing's for sure, though - it can't have half the features that a ship like the Enterprise has, so it's probably classified as a Spaceship instead of the much more elaborate Starships.

I see your points. The two rows of coils idea is old actually, the Enterprise-D is said to have the same layout.

Really? I don't really know too much about the Ent-D's technical specs, but that's interesting. So the Ent-D basically has four nacelles, then? Going by the logic that the new movie is using, that is.

Yeah, that actually qualifies it as having four nacelles. Look for diagrams on EAS.

well, supposedly an earthquake machine. a couple of incidents and it was quickly shuttered up... and he DESIGNED a death ray, didn't manage to build it.
if only Edison hadn't taken it upon himself to start a vendetta against him...
