Description
"Only on the stormy nights, when the air rolls freely around the waves does she appear. She rises like an angel, waves crashing around her, creating a wonderful ocean dress of blue and purples. This woman is a of the Sea. One of only a few who remain - The Protector of all things precious in the waters she rules. Men from other parts, far away travel the seas for endless miles and miles searching for the mysterious woman who protects or haunts the oceans - She is a beauty of nothing you have ever seen and only a few will gaze upon her smile. But be warned fair traveler - Look too deeply in her eyes and you might fall out of your boat!"Find my work on Etsy:

The style of painting and design in this is so appealing!
And the story just ties everything in so wonderfully! Very fine job, indeed!

that's my second favorite thing to do after actually painting it - to create stories for them This piece was actually a friend's idea which ironically turned out nothing like what he suggested
I call that artistic licensing
Thank you so much for your great comment

I have yet to have an art piece turn out the way as expected. And that's exactly what it is: artistic license! YAY!
And you're welcome!

Well I call it artistic License. But my friend wanted her floating on top of the sea and I drew her to big hence the turning into the water, which I actually like more now

Well, see, you're correct.
She looks like she's floating ontop of the sea to me...was she expecting more of a reposing aspect? Actually, I think, as the focus of the picture, she's perfect! Oh well...having worked in an art store for a bit, I've never abided by the saying "The customer is always right"...'cause sometimes they're not...

That's true, you have to have "some" creativity to your own creation. I was never good at proportion, still working on it, but one thing I have been taught to do is work through a problem in a painting, instead of starting over

Cannot look away from this piece...there are so many shapes and forms in the water and the clouds, you expect something hovering under the surface. It gives the painting a really mystical aura and the colours give a sense of tranquility. Once again, beautiful work, Dave.

Hum... tech question:
Did you use masking liquid for the white lines among the waves?
Anyways, awsome pic ^______^

DavidHoffrichter In reply to Dragonpunchi [2007-01-13 12:51:44 +0000 UTC]
Hey thanks for your comment, Actually no I never have used masking liquid. As my teacher puts it "too much work afterwards, but if you can get passed the scrapping it's pretty useful" For this one I just used a smaller brush and less water in the water, Ironically
I do like to use white gesso sometimes mixed with watercolor paint for fixing mistakes and adding detail.

Woooooot???
Gesso... I had never heard of (nor would come up with) that O___O
how do you use it? Do you mix it with a bit of water beforehando or just as it is?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DavidHoffrichter In reply to Dragonpunchi [2007-01-15 22:28:17 +0000 UTC]
well, gesso is an acrylic that you can mix with watercolors to give a thin "fixed" layer over the spot you want to finish off. The girl in this picture has a lot of gesso on her face. Be careful though, when the gesso drys with the paint it dries darker

Thanks A LOT ^____________^
I love to use new materials with watercolours. I like them a lot, but I still have a looong way to go 'till I can use them anything above "good"
And this might just take me a step closer.
Thanks Again
