Description OK, this is NOT that bullsh*t tutorial with the candle flame, this is far more complex and way better. This tutorial will show you how to make realistic flames in Flash 8. And if you have enough patience, you can make them look just like REAL flames, not crappy cartoony ones.

1.This is the only .fla file available out there, so far, that will teach you how to make this type of flame. Enjoy!

2. The effect uses Perlin noise. This type of noise is something created by Ken Perlin, a real guru. Perlin noise is also used to create wood, marble, clouds etc (in Flash) and it is mostly used in computer games to make objects less shiny and make them stained or muddy and other things. Just Google it to find out more.

3. How did I do it? Well, I saw a nice flame on a site and wanted to do something like it, but did not know how. After searching the web for 2 days I finally bumped into some useful tutorials about Perlin noise, but none were conclusive when regarding flames and none provided .fla files. Well, in one search I finally found a .fla file with Perlin noise used in a certain animation. I instantly downloaded it and modified it so that I would get the flame effect.

4. This burning sphere also uses a shape tween that can stand a lot of improving, but I leave that to you. I already provided the most important part.

5. The file that you can download is an archive and it contains the source .fla file, a swf file and a txt file with explanations embedded in the code. (so you need WinRar if you use Windows). Flash 8 and AS2 compatible, works in Adobe Flash CS3 too.

I know that this comment doesn't say much, but trust me, this is really really good and will get you inspired in many ways!

Is there any way to change the noise direction... or it just an optical illusion that it appears to be moving left-to-right?

Wow, very cool project! I like it quite a bit.

The only problem is that the perlin noise seems to suddenly change. I'm going to try and examine the code to remove that super flicker, it doesn't look quite natural since it's so perfectly timed.

Other then that, very wonderful project!!
