I don't believe this is over-sharpened at all, having checked it in the full view to see, but of course you are free to believe it is.

However, I believe it would have been a whole lot better for yourself and the photographer if you had left out the part about the over-sharpening discounting it as a DD. Not a very nice thing to say when this photographer had no control over receiving a DD - and ones ideas on what is a worthy DD is completely different from someone else's.

Just saying. Not disrespecting your opinion at all, but rather pointing out the fact that DD's are nothing but staff picks and it's unfair on the artist to say what you had said.

Close inspection of the horizon and distant oil platform show a very obvious white sharpening halo around them, the rig has turned red through overediting also so my point is valid and in fairness I did say that in all other aspects it was a decent image. Yes we all differ in our opinions and I won't be the first or last to express a differing opinion openly, the most convenient and appropriate place for me to do that was below the image I viewed.

I apologise if that disturbs you but on here we all have to take the bad with the predominantly good.

I don't think you understood what I was saying. I have no objections to you stating that you think the image is over-sharpened, and I encourage everyone to be honest when leaving a comment in regards to the deviation itself. I was however stating that it is unfair for you to say what you said about it not being DD worthy to the photographer of the photo. Such comments should be taken directly to the person who chose the DD, that's all. It isn't very nice for deviants who've received a DD to have someone say to them they didn't deserve it (believe me, I know it isn't a nice feeling!).

I hope you understand what I was saying now.

As for the over-sharpening. I can see what you are talking about on the horizon - however, it is not enough in my opinion to take away the worthiness of this being a DD.

Ok , I am a relative newbie here when it comes to such things and so never gave thought to the valid point you make and yes I see now that I could and should have aired my concern with you personally rather than where I did, hindsight is a wonderful thing and I genuinely apologise for my mistake .
That said I was of the opinion that to achieve the acclaim of a DD the work should be faultless , I now see that I was wrong there too .
You suggest that the oversharpening is not an issue for you and ok who am I to say it ought to be , however this site and it's groups in particular shout about high standards with members regularly getting images declined from groups because of such flaws. Surely then DD status for an image with poor quality editing as in this case is not something you can seriously justify is it ? Be honest we both know that if this were printed out at anything larger than a postcard the fault would be very apparent and unnacceptable .
Many members are learning from what they see here and this sends out a very misleading message as far as I see it.

I find it hard to believe this photo in particular would be declined from a lot of groups. Groups are pretty flexible in terms of quality, as long as it isn't too bad. There are a select few groups who are very, very picky, but they are few and far between.

For the quality, I feel that we will have to agree to disagree otherwise this could go on forever and a day. If you have a problem with some minor sharpening issues in this deviation and getting a DD, you are going to have many problems with many DD's chosen as there are DD's of much worse quality than this.

In regards to daily deviations, I think the mistaken idea held by a lot of people in the community of deviantART is that it is a high accolade (sure, it might be to some people). But it is just a staff pick: "A Daily Deviation is intended to give an artist a chance to be seen by a large portion of the community" - as quoted from FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature? and "A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large." from FAQ #61: What is a Daily Deviation?

In the end, the DD doesn't just feature the photo but brings attention the artist. Sometimes, we don't always pick the best work from the artists gallery, but it happens.

I'm more than happy to move on re my initial concern about quality as there is little more to say on that subject now.
You hit the nail on the head then with your summation in paragraph 3 , I for one held that mistaken view as must be obvious from my previous replies and I could imagine it might well be a common misconception.
You link to faq's , now there is something else that is taken by the likes of yourself ( staff) for granted... we don't all read the faq's , given that the one relevant here is numbered at 873 I am not surprised I haven't read it .

On a positive note what this has done then for me and I guess anyone else equally mistaken is to point out that DD's aren't in fact the accolade they first appear to be and that same statement also addresses fully my concern re them being awarded for less than perfect work. Thank you for taking time to put us mistaken members in the picture and for being very patient with me. Now you have made me wiser I doubt if I will ever need the answer to faq #873 .

I personally don't take FAQs for granted. I know very well no one (or not many people) read them, nor do they read the TOS when they sign up. I've been on dA for 8 years, it's just a common thing really

wow, nyssi , thanks for going into bat for me.
Sam, I don't take any CC has offensive and it helps me in the future.
Just for you knowledge however, in the original size, I use high pass filter for sharpening and mask out the sky and smooth parts from that layer.
When I resize for web, I unsharp mask the resized layer generically. I put images up here for appreciation as I'm already part of an active forum where I put images of for CC.
FYI, I have this printed at 16X24 from the file and there is no issue with haloing if that's one of your concerns for me
You might also want to consider that in the red light as it was that evening, the actual area was actually redder than what I have portrayed.
I thank nyssi for suggesting this as a DD and I'm glad I got the unexpected honour. You have a great stream too by the way - don't take it too seriously on my behalf though, these images are the result of stress relief through a hobby and it will never replace my day job !
