I'll have to give this technique a try sometime as I have been really struggling to figure out a decent way to do soft-shading in firealpaca.

I loosely followed your guide when I was shading this: viviansthingstuffs.deviantart.…
It helped me quite tremendously.

Where do I put the new layer (Step 4) Is it below the 1st clipped or the most below.

You clip that layer to the top of the chain!

This is extremely useful, thank you! The only thing I don't understand is Step 8. What does it mean to add? Otherwise, it's so helpful! I FINALLY know how to color.

I'm glad!!
Add is a layer mode! In very loose and somewhat inaccurate terms it works opposite of Multiply (so it brightens instead of darkens)

One thing I don't understand is the "coloring things inside the lines". I have accessories inside the base and I have to carefully color inside the lines. TBH I think that the clipping doesn't help. Am I doing something wrong?

Are your layers set up correctly? As in, Base

I kind of gave up on the project on FA and finished it on PTS. You can look at the post called Azura to see how it turned out...I honestly think it looks like I put more effort with Sai...

Also I probably sounds like a complete idiot, but how do you do your lineart?? When I try to line my sketches, it ends up looking rough and thick, and yours looks a lot smoother. Am I doing something wrong?? (I use the pen tool for linearting)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
deidaraart5 In reply to Scarlet-Wonderland [2016-09-11 04:23:22 +0000 UTC]
It's all about fluid motions tbh
like when I first started digital art my lineart was heavy and sketchy too, but with a lot of practice I've gotten better at doing a single long stroke instead of a bunch of little ones. You just gotta work at it and it'll get easier with time!!! (Also using the correction settings, which are at the top of the program when brush is selected really helps lmao- I use setting 7 myself)

I guess I just gotta practice more lmao. But it's reassuring to know that my linearts wont be thick and sketchy forever ) tysm!!

This really helped me! but i have a question, when I'm overall done with the art, i wanted to merge all the layers together. But when i do it, the colors mix up and stuff. i think it has to do with the add and multiply settings. how do i fix it without getting the colors mixed around from all the layers?

Thank you for this ;w; I only have a desktop, and trying to find a tutorial that does NOT require a wacom was pretty hard, but now that I have it right here, I'm just so glad, thank you! Since I recently started digital, I'm having fun now with ease.

I'm really glad to know this tutorial was so helpful to you!! I'm also glad to know it works without a tablet (as that's what I use, but the technique doesn't require it as you've proven)
Feel free to show me if you use the technique!
