I'm going to watch this art after I finish the book (lucky to got the old book from 1985), because I still wanna imagine my own chars when I read
And let us know when you've finished with your project. Do you plan to make a comic book ? something else ? I'd buy that probably.

Yeah, that's the fun part of reading books, you don't want your interpretation to be too influenced by someone else's!
I have the rest of the full characters and whatnot uploaded here, but I do plan on putting together an art book in the future! A comic would be super awesome too if I had the time!

I just love the novel Neuromancer and am a big fan of cyberpunk. This is really well made. Will you by chance draw Molly? She is my favorite.

Same, definitely one of my favorite novels ever!
Thanks!
I drew Molly here, along with Case and Armitage:

Your Molly and Armitage look so cool! I love this! Great Job! If you want a fun cyberpunk video game I highly recommend Gemini Rue.

This is great! I've tinkered around with drawing Molly and I kinda felt that the way her eyes where described in the book didn't work that great for illustrations and tended to revise them to resemble the 'ranger eyes' that Batou had in ghost In the shell but here you've totally pulled of the classic look and made it look cool rather than goofy. I'm totally impressed.
The texture work on Ratt and the Panther Modern's clothes are nice touches to : D

Her eyes were tough. Eyes are so key for expressions and faces, and I didn't want to give her something looking like small sunglasses lenses. Definitely wanted the larger shades, so I think it worked out!

Get off your lazy butt and get hired as an artist/creative consultant for the up-and-coming Neuromancer film adaptation, already .
Seriously speaking though, I am a bit worried that one of Gibson's finest novels is going to be shredded like cheap cheese and left to moulder in a drearily gloomy corner...all in the name of chasing a few more greenbacks.

Ha, it's definitely a dream of mine! I do plan on contacting Mr. Gibson on Twitter, and somehow shop this project around once it's all done...
I can see it being very badly done, very easily unfortunately.
In all honesty though, it'd be a very difficult film to adapt, there's nothing quite like it.

I'm getting super excited just by looking at the sneak previews! I just saw this and the teaser for your Neuromancer project and I'd really love to see it coming to life. I'll be watching.
Dumb question since I consider myself a huge fan but wasn't Case black-haired? Or I've imagined that detail?

One other thing: I'm trying to start a William Gibson group here on DA. (Having trouble though; waiting for a response from the Help Desk.) When I do get that group up and running, would you mind if I added this picture to the group gallery? And would you be interested in joining?

Best of luck with it!
I'd definitely be down for joining and adding this to the group, Gibson's an awesome world-builder, and deserves a group devoted to him. There's not a whole lot of fanart of his stories however, which may be the reason DA's not getting to your request as efficiently as they could.

It looks to me like there's plenty of Gibson fan art on this site, but a disproportionate amount of it is dedicated to "Neuromancer," and a disproportionate amount of that dedicated to Molly. Which isn't a bad thing; I'll just have to figure out how to sort the various categories of the group's gallery. When there is a group.

Deimos-Remus In reply to LizzyChrome [2015-02-21 08:15:07 +0000 UTC]
I mean, Neuromancer seems to have been the most 'groundbreaking' out of his sci-fi novels, but I agree.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LizzyChrome In reply to Deimos-Remus [2015-02-21 15:52:42 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. I have a whole section of the group dedicated to Molly, because she has enough fan art to warrant her own group. Some of the pictures overlap with the "Neuromancer" group. If a picture shows Molly specifically in a context related to "Neuromancer," "Johnny Mneumonic" or "Mona Lisa Overdrive," I'm adding it to those respective groups too. But if it's just Molly/Sally from no determinable point in time, it might just sit in the Molly section.
IDK, it's rather tricky, since so many of Gibson's characters and concepts overlap throughout his books. It's one of the things I love so much about his writing.

I'm almost done re-reading "Neuromancer" and, for the first time, am looking forward to "Count Zero." I never cared for that book, but for some reason, I have a feeling I may find something new this time around. Maybe because I understand the whole series better now.

LizzyChrome In reply to Deimos-Remus [2015-02-24 03:46:48 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes! "Mona Lisa Overdrive" is one of my favorite books period, and I love it almost as much as "Neuromancer.
Here's how I judge the "Sprawl" trilogy: "Neuromancer:" the best, period.
"Count Zero:" Boring, mostly a filler, with a few memorable *supporting* characters. Has more action, but totally lacks the atmosphere or interesting protagonists of "Neuromancer."
"Mona Lisa Overdrive:" Slow but beautiful read. Good character development, fantastic atmosphere. The dark, smokey, rainy future from "Neuromancer" is back. Molly is back. One of the few interesting characters from "Count Zero" is back, and now a well-developed protagonist. Overall, not quite as good as "Neuromancer," but infinitely better than "Count Zero."

Deimos-Remus In reply to LizzyChrome [2015-02-26 15:03:33 +0000 UTC]
I figured Count Zero would be the 'black sheep' of the series, the first sequel to anything usually is. From the sounds of the plot, it almost seems more weird than Neuromancer, but not necessarily in an effective way. Still, looking forward to reading it soon.
I've heard great things about Mona-Lisa Overdrive, so I'm definitely looking forward to reading it!

LizzyChrome In reply to Deimos-Remus [2015-02-26 18:51:13 +0000 UTC]
I'm re-reading "Count Zero" right now. It's not horrible, but it's pretty boring compared to the other books. And it's really not all that "weird." On the contrary, the characters are far more like ordinary people. None of the main characters are A.I.s, or holo-magicians, or people with cyborg augmentations. Just an average hacker, an average mercenary, and an average art collector. Blech.
"Mona Lisa Overdrive" is SO much better. I'll warn you, it's kind of slow, and there isn't too much action. But the atmosphere is enchanting, and the characters are SO much more interesting than in "Count Zero."

SO awesome! I'm re-reading "Neuromancer" for god knows what time now, and these are so fantastic!
Molly is dead on, exactly right. You gave her the combination of athletic and stylish that I pictured her with (some people try to make her look a bit too "sexy"). Case is perfect. Ratz, I love the odd crab-like shape you gave his robotic arm! Linda looks different than how I pictured her, but it works.
The guy with the pink hair at the bottom, and the guy with the pony tail and the neon-green suit, I'm lost on. I'm guessing the guy in the suit is either Armitage, or Loony Zone, and the one with the pink hair is either Lupus Yonderboy or Peter Riviera?

Deimos-Remus In reply to LizzyChrome [2015-02-16 17:50:42 +0000 UTC]
I've only just finished reading for the first time, but it definitely won't be my last. I plan on reading Count Zero and Mona-Lisa Overdrive before I do.
Glad you like them, much appreciated! Something else people do to Molly is give her just white eyes, as opposed to her mirrorshades. It definitely poses a challenge, since eyes are so key for expression-making, but I like what they do to her face.
The suit dude is Wage, and yes, the other one is yonderboy. I'll be tackling Armitage after the current group of four or five characters, which I'm really excited for!

LizzyChrome In reply to Deimos-Remus [2015-02-16 20:05:52 +0000 UTC]
Wage! Okay, that works.
And yes, it really irritates me when people just give Molly odd eyes, instead of the lenses. I mean, how many times does Gibson mention her LENSES, and the fact that no one can see her eyes or even tell if they're opened or shut? Blech.
That's one thing I'd worry about a "Neuromancer" movie messing up--Molly's lenses.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Deimos-Remus In reply to LizzyChrome [2015-02-19 03:05:41 +0000 UTC]
I mean, I can definitely see how the big lens eyes can make expressions problematic, but that goes along with her type anyway, she's not a super emotionally driven character.
It's one of the many things. They'd probably make them able to come off her face or something. I'm mostly concerned with actor choices. Last update that surfaced about the film was that Liam Neeson was to play Armitage and Mark Wahlberg was to play Case. Liam Neeson has been playing the same dude ever since 'Taken' and has turned into such a generic action star. Wahlberg on the other hand is just such a craptacular actor (in most things), it's not even funny, plus he's nowhere near the right age. Glad that version of the film seems to have fallen through, for the moment being anyway...

LizzyChrome In reply to Deimos-Remus [2015-02-19 04:13:04 +0000 UTC]
Really? I hadn't heard those rumors. I did hear the rumor though about Hayden Christensen playing Case.
Honestly, I'm pretty indiferent to whomever plays Case and Armitage. They're such generic character types that you'd have to really work hard to mess them up. Maybe if you case Nicholas Cage or Pewee Herman, that would bug me.
Come to think of it, Pewee would be a brilliant choice for Lupus Yonderboy, Peter Riviera, Loony Zone, or any super freaky character along those lines. (But not the Finn; Pewee can't pull off grouchy enough for Finn.)

Deimos-Remus In reply to LizzyChrome [2015-02-21 08:13:32 +0000 UTC]
I think the latest rumors seemed to have fizzled out a couple of years ago already. Knowing that Case and Armitage are generic archetypal characters, I'd love to have really good actors to play them, so as to get a memorable performance. Most choices that have come up are too old for their respective parts, Case in particular is in his mid 20s to early 30s, and Wahlberg would just kill the role. (not in a good way)
I've been using likenesses for these, and I'm trying to choose them wisely for both looks and acting potential for the most part.
So far I have:
Luke Treadaway as Case
Antje Truau as Molly
Jon Hamm as Armitage
Gerard Depardieu as Ratz
Jackie Earle Haley as Finn
Cillian Murphy as Julius Deane
Paul Dano as Lupus Yonderboy
Not an actor per se, but Christopher Owens as Riviera
Natalie Dormer as Linda
and some more, but I forgot their names at the moment.

I've never heard of most of those, which is probably good; new faces would be a good thing for a "Neuromancer" movie.
Cillian Murphy as Deane? That one would be....different than what I pictured. I'd think Murphy would be more for Peter Riviera. I imagined Deane to be a putrid-looking lump of plastic surgery. But, he's not a character who I really care that much about, so he could be played by Dakota Fanning for all I care.
Last night, when I was reading "Neuromancer" again, I found that I was picturing Riviera to look and sound like the guy who played Adrian Veidt in "Watchmen." He'd be great for Riviera, IMO. Him, or Cillian Murphy.
I REALLY want Arman Shimmerman (Quark from "Deep Space Nine") to play the Finn, and usually picture Finn to look a bit like him. But Steve Buscemi, Michael Keaton, and plenty of other character-actors would be good too.
As for Molly, there are so many actresses who could pull her off brilliantly. But I'd be terrified of a director overlooking all of those girls, and instead picking some blonde with a high-pitched voice, and giving her a "I'll cut you without breaking a nail!" personality.
But wow, I just googled the girl you picked, Antje Trau, and in the first few photos she looks almost EXACTLY how I pictured Molly! If she was officially cast I think I'd orgasm (out of sci-fi-fan reasons, not lesbian ones). And Natalie Dormer would make a very cute Linda Lee, it looks like.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Deimos-Remus In reply to LizzyChrome [2015-02-21 18:35:24 +0000 UTC]
Well, Deane does look impossibly young , but I think some extra prosthetics added to his face to make it look unnaturally smooth and pinkish would do the trick.
Didn't think about Matthew Goode (Ozymandias), he'd be a good fit too, and as an actor, I think he's improving quite a bit since his earlier roles.
Yeah, Shimmerman does look close as well! I think what made me choose Jackie Earle Haley was his big teeth, something Finn was often described as having. Plus, he's just an interesting, off-beat actor. Really talented too.
Antje Truau was in the recent Superman film, which was okay, but I think she could portray Molly very well. Attractive without being the dumb, generic type.

LizzyChrome In reply to Deimos-Remus [2015-02-21 21:43:24 +0000 UTC]
"Attractive without being the dumb, generic type." Good way of wording it. Molly is undeniably sexy, but not at all in the conventional way. I'm scared a "Neuromancer" movie would make her a sort of Barb Wire type of character. (And I love Barb Wire, but I'm just saying, that would be all wrong for Molly.)
