Description
EDIT: It has been brought to my attention by a commenter that the 'randomly placed apostrophes' were throwing off the flow.THERE WILL BE NO PUNCUATION. This will be a continueing trend throughout the rest of my poetry. I've seen the light and old habits die hard.

Poem about people acting older than they are, or wanting to be older, not taking the time to enjoy themselves while they're what they are. =]

I love this piece! The use of colour is great, as usual, and the sentiment really got to me. I'm 22, but I don't feel grown up at all. I'm actually quite scared of growing up, I mean, I barely know how to use the washing machine and I know even less about... er, tax, or money, or whatever it is these older people seem to get so excited about. I don't think I'm cut out for it at all!
Really though, I'm scared of the idea of growing up because I'm afraid it means I'll slowly lose the innocence, enthusiasm, energy, curiosity and creativity that I seem to associate with youthfulness. But hopefully growing older doesn't necessarily mean growing up, at least in that you can avoid the negative things associated with it; things like disillusionment, a weariness for life, or a growing narrow-mindedness and fear of unfamiliarity.
Being young at heart is a beautiful thing, and I hope everyone can hold on to that, no matter their age - young or old.

I can see what you mean.... but the part where it talks about learning to drive and getting a job as signs of growing up is completely untrue. I should point out that there's a difference between "being young", "being mature" and "being young at heart".
Albert Einstein learned to skate when he was 73, he never stopped being a child throughout his life and yet he earned a Nobel Prize!!
Still I agree that some teenagers just want to grow up really fast. One of my friends whom I met when she was 19 (I was 15), already seemed like she was a lot older than she was back then. Even now that I'm 23 I don't feel as old as she was when I met her!! :/
I'm by far the most childish person at the studio I work for and yet the one they rely on most, haha.

I definitely don't want to get any older. I draw the line at graduating college. Like heck do I want to go out into the world and get a real job.
Nah, I suppose we all have to take things as they come and manage the best we can. But I really do wish I had cherished my childhood more when I had it.

I love this poem - it conveys all my feelings about a lot of people I know. People like myself want to act our age and just be ourselves, while others want to seem older than they are - most are actually younger than me.

I agree, but what if their parents are the ones who aren't letting them do the things kids usually do- which is getting into trouble? I don't mean to sound like a trouble-maker but..we all have those things we do as kids. Stay up late, sneak outside, take any chance like that...
I don't know but what if a kid isn't able to do any of the things normal kids do? Where's their childhood if they don't have any friends to be a kid with?
So I think some have their exceptions for acting older if they're never allowed to be a kid.
I certainly never get to run around in puddles, and I don't have the friends to laugh with. So some of the kids turn to technology which turns to media..which turns to trying to act older.

If they have parents that forbid them from staying up late then that is between the parent and the child. Staying up late doesn't make you an adult. It doesn't make you grown. It makes you tired. IF the child is stupid enough to sneak out then that child is still a child. NOT a grown up. Grown ups have to own up to their mistakes and bad decisions, children do not.
You don't have to have other kids to be a child. Playing with others is just a part of it but you can be a well rounded child without other children, you just might not have all of the same social skills as others. It doesn't make children grow up faster or slower.
There are only exceptions when a child is put in a position where he or she must act like an adult to get by. Like a kid who has just lost both parents and is now an orphan, or a child who was abused in a way that mentally attacks them and they no longer act as a child. Even a child who grows up in a single parent home with other siblings and must act as a substitute mother/father figure and set a good example. These are the few and only exceptions.
Jumping in puddles and having friends to laugh with doesn't define you being a child or having a childhood. Its just a small fraction of things you can do in your youth.

It doesn't matter if you respect it or not. You can't post something in a public area and expect someone NOT to respond. Next time if you don't want someone to respond to something DON'T post anything at all.
Its stupid for you to post something in a public area and when someone replies for you to say "I didn't ask for your opinion," or "I didn't ask for your response."
YOU posted it PUBLICLY so whether or not you ASKED for it you WILL receive one.
Use common sense.

There's one reason why I think teens wanna grow up fast and it's because, when you're kids, everyone's like "oh ain't they cute?" And when you're an adult people are more inclined to listen to you. But with teens, they feel so not listened to and they know they can't go back in years so they wish to go forward. Most teens want to be treated like adults because it's unfair that most adults treat children like either adults or children, NOT teenagers. And out of the two, most teens choose adults but the responsibilty on top of the freedom becomes too much and that's where we have our downfall. Maybe if adults stop stereotyping teens because it's easier for them, maybe they should try UNDERSTANDING teenagers, why do you think our generation of teens are failing, I mean think about it, the cane didn't work, but now we've banned the cane, teachers have given up and only come to work for the salary. Why do you think there's so much anti social behaviour. Sure you can say "Because there's no discepline, bring back the cane." But that's missing the point completely! Surely you should be asking, "Why would these teens want to be anti social and cause trouble, what will they gain?" One word: "attention". It's sad really. It's a cry for help. And it's sad to think that teenagers would willingly get themselves IN TROUBLE because they get so little attention. So instead of thinking about discepline, start asking the right questions. Prevention is better than cure.
Sorry for going into detail, I know right? All this out of one little poem, I just had to express my feelings. Sorry.

Hiro-Akemi In reply to DarkEpicAngel [2011-07-07 19:10:22 +0000 UTC]
Teenagers are dumb sometimes because in reality if they want to be heard about something important, if they did it in a well organized and fashionable manner people would listen. [Like kids who rally together to get better tools for education]. Problem is teenagers think they are entitled to things and are entitled to be heard when they are not.
I somewhat felt the same way as a teenager, thing is though, I knew how to articulate my thoughts and relay them in a way that someone listening would actually listen. Its about how you come off. But even still, teenagers think once they turn 18 all the world will listen to them and truth is, the world doesn't give a squat about what you have to say whether you are 18 or 55, or even 80. If the world doesn't want to listen they don't want to listen.
In the end they are still kids crying out for attention. So no matter if they do grow up or pretend they are still kids. No one will take you seriously if you act like a child about an issue.

I never said crying out for attention was a GOOD thing...
I'm just saying, it's reality, it happens. And it's true, even in the adult world, you get listened to more or less depnding on how you WERE BORN or what FAMILY you were born into. And you can deny this all you want but I've been OUT THERE and I've seen that this is the case. I'm just saying that unless you have the 'image' that consumers want to sell you for, you're basically useless. Well, you're not, but you're treated as if you are. I'm saying that it's sad that we live in a world where we can no LONGER be ourselves. I'm just saying that NOT EVEN SOME ADULTS get listened to but most young teenagers that have a CHANCE, one SHINING chance to do something about our world, are pushed aside. And that's simply because the people at the top don't WANT us to change they don't want us teens to think to much, they want to dumb things down for us and make them easy but how easy is TOO easy? And another thing, not all teenagers are loud, rebellious people, some are quiet, reserved and only speak up when they NEED to. Yet adults in the area I live in TAKE ADVANTAGE of that fact and treat you as if you don't exist. And as for what you said "No-one will listen to you if you act like a child" THAT THERE, is the problem, they expect people to act older than they are, how could you expect a teenager to act like an adult? They're not. They're just a teenager. And I don't know if this has happened to you before but I was trying to explain something to my teacher, I wanted to learn more and understand why he had certain opinions about things and he was just like "Shut up child, what do YOU know?" before one word came out of my mouth. THAT is what annoys me. These days children just settle for what they hear in class instead of GOING OUT and learning things, or asking QUESTIONS, the teacher talks and they just nod like robots. But that's just my opinion. Mind you. It may not mean much.

Being young has its good parts, mainly the part where you don't have to pay a shitload of money and have quite a lot of time to do fun stuff. However, I would NEVER want to do it over again. I like my life how it is now, it's a lot better than it was then.

It gets annoying, but that's the way it goes. You also add such color and meaning to your poems! I love it! I might have to put up one of my own poems up here too sometime! I remember when I was in 5th grade some years back, I was in the poetry club....but I try not to think of that because one of the other members who was my friend was killed in the middle of that year/club by his uncle....Not the best thing to think of...Anyway, It's very good! My childhood was kind a ... fcked up but I loved those moments when I was sitting next to the tv, watching cartoons or playing video games. Also I remember when me and my parents went to the zoo and amusement park... But then I went to elementary class 3 and I had to grow up to defend myself from bullies. Nothing else I can't remember from my childhood, which is sad.

I don't envy the little kids who want to grow up so fast, neither the people who insist on acting mature. I want to hold on to my childhood forever, honestly, I would rather keep watching cartoons and playing kid's games than changing because of my age. Age is just a number!
