Description
LOOKEY HERE: While the below paragraphs are what the piece was based upon and inspired by, certain aspects of my personal views have changed. If you're interested in those, refer to the edit below. Also this was from two years ago, I had terrible typing manners.i was reading a book on hitler, and (dont ask me why how, i dont feel like explaining it) i came to the conclusion that cities are bad.
it was talking about how he took credit for figuring out that when you group a bunch of people together, they end up losing their sense of self and relate more to the whole of the croud. we're also studying urbanization and the growth of society in anthropolpgy, so of cource i'm already pissed at humanity.
my thoughts? when you group alot of people in one place under one name, you loose the individual voice alltogether and get an overall feeling of dull insanity. this works in crowds, cities, rallys, assemblies, and is the sole puropse of a pep rally: to get people to feel the same about something.
humans keep building bigger, keep adding more, and in that act we loose a bit of who we are. i'm not saying that large ammounts of anything is evil, i'm just saying that enough is enough.
give me your thoughts on this...i know mine are a jumbled mess, just because it would take me a million years to explain all of my reasonong.
acrylics and ink on cardboard, about 30 minutes.
copyright me.
6/30 EDIT:
*TO ANYONE WHO FAV'S COMMENTS, VIEWS, READS, WHATEVER: THANKS SO MUCH! I may not have the time to thank all of you, but goddamnit I'm gonna try.*
Wow a DD! To think this little flap from a shoebox from over two years ago... THANKS GUYS! (most of all ^limnides - THANK YOU I AM SO FLATTERED)
Also, OH DEAR LORD THE GRAMMAR DON'T LOOK AT IT. The above rant is also out of date. I guess I'll explain in the comments.
To sum it up: I actually like productive cities. I plan on moving to Chicago and I think the history and architecture surrounding cities themselvs is wonderful. I take the painting as figurative, but you may see it differently.
Overall, less is more people, less is more.

Actually I think the original is sitting in a box in my room at home somewhere. Or I gave it to my art teacher. I might have traded it to someone for something though. It's a pretty small thing--about 4"x5", so I'm not too sure what happened to it.

I love and hate this picture in the same time - cause it's good and cause I'm afraid, this will be our future. The first cities, the second countries, the third continent and at the end the Earth.

Ehhh, I think thing'll be alright in the end. Maybe not the immediate end, but some sort of end.
And thank you.

Well people learn and ideas evolve. I've just gained a new appreciation for the dynamics of large cities and less of a hatred for what is not happening, more a curiosity of what will come.
thank you?

This picture, I love. And I agree with you 1001%. My neighbours and the other residents of the town I live in also agree. So it's OK for me to agree with you too.

I'd think it was alright to agree with me anyway. But, as stated above, my views have changed.
Thank you for the feedback.

Great piece! I absolutely agree with your thoughts behind this - it's why I believe the current model of civilisation is so deeply flawed. Good people in the Minority World may be able to bring themselves to recognise the impact of the actions/lifestyle of their society (exploitation of faraway peoples/pollution/environmental damage/resource wars etc), but even they will find it difficult to truely empathise on an emotional level in the same way that tribes & strong local communities work. & sadly most peope don't give a damn beyond their narrow, selfish existence.
The 'tribe' is still the only successful model of Human existence - sustainable, self-supporting, fair to all members. We have yet to master vast-scale centralised management of our populations, which are unsustainable in their increasing numbers. Unfortunately those in charge are still struggling to grasp that you cannot have infinite growth on a limited planet.

Some of that I agree with, though I believe human natue, etc. will always have these issues in the open.
Also, views on the system of living together vary by culture- Americans much prefer their "independance" and scorn most anything else, while other cultures, definitely those still employing centralized or familial ways of living, would see many benefits in working as a whole.
Thank you.

the illustration is superb. it really depicts the rut that you are feeling and it shows in your illustration. i will have to agree though, that people tend to lose their individuality nowadays. basically, they lose themselves without realizing their own self-worth. and it's sad.

dementedsped In reply to wulfbane [2009-07-05 22:20:31 +0000 UTC]
It is sad. It is widely considere a selfish act to think and live for one's self and one's own rational ideals rather than for the "good of the whole".
Thanks very much.

wulfbane In reply to dementedsped [2009-07-07 03:11:46 +0000 UTC]
yep. but isn't it much better to live and act for one's own self worth for the good of the whole?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dementedsped In reply to wulfbane [2009-07-10 22:33:55 +0000 UTC]
If you're living for the whole you're living for the whole, whatever the means.
At the end of the day, you can say you did something for self-betterment or whatever, and live not for the good of the whole but not against it either, you're helping yourself along. You are part of the whole yourself, so working for yourself and not against others can be considered beneficial to the whole in the end.
at least that's how I see it.

How thoughtful of you.
