Description A Cell-Shading tutorial for Paint.NET (pdn). Paint.NET is a free image editing program. You can download it here: www.getpaint.net Maybe I'll make a lineart one. Hope I didn't waste your time with reading this, ROFL.
Lineart used in this tutorial is done by *ColorMeWonderful .
Brushes/stamps/whatever were taken from some Polish blog with stuff for CG.
So =Chamao wanted a tutorial for shading in Paint.NET so I tried to make one *epicfailshot*

If you want your layer to stay transparent you can't do anything about them.

If you want to submit a picture made in Paint.NET on dA, save it in a format different than .pdn. Use for example .png.

This is a really helpful tutorial, good job ^^

....but I seem to have run into a problem =/

Whenever I use the brush tool using white as my colour, it somehow disappears behind the Background layer.

Now, did you make the Background layer white (the default layer in Paint.NET), and then just erase the Background layer (grey) you made in the tutorial to make white areas....

....or am I just completely missing something <:/?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to CyanParadox [2009-06-30 06:57:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if I got what you said right, but I'll try to help.

"Whenever I use the brush tool using white as my colour, it somehow disappears behind the Background layer."
That can only happen if you're using white on a Multiply layer. The white areas will appear if you change the layer's setting to Normal.
I think this should solve the problem.

CyanParadox In reply to DemonedAway [2009-06-30 18:21:25 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that sounds about right.

Will setting the layer to Normal effect the tutorial at all....?

Hi. I have drawn my picture on the backround layer and I want to put a backround behind that. Is there away to do that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to Animewox [2009-06-10 12:50:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes. First, in the layer settings change the layer's mode to Multiply. Then make a new layer under the lineart layer. The background now can be added on this layer.

i'm a beginner and i just like to ask.. what's the difference of lineart coloring and cell shading??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to yurisaku [2008-12-29 14:59:14 +0000 UTC]

Uuuh... Lineart coloring is any kind of coloring. Cellshading is hard shading. Soft shading is well, soft shading.

This great for a Paint.NET user like me! I've tried to do some cell shading with it, sometimes successful and not =/ But this is GREAT!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-26 10:04:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, glad you like it. It takes practice. You have to be quite precise when doing cellshading, so it's actually harder than soft shading.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizashi In reply to DemonedAway [2008-12-26 19:27:44 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I don't enjoy doing cell shading a lot >.< Luckily I think I've figured out a way to soft shade in the program since we don't have airbushes yet ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-27 19:06:01 +0000 UTC]

Nah, you just blur the hell out of everything. You just have to go beyond the lines with the shading (and clean up later) so that there won't be empty space near the lines.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizashi In reply to DemonedAway [2008-12-28 21:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I see what you mean ^^ I did that before and there were always empty spaces inside the lines, so I didn't like blurring =/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-28 21:57:57 +0000 UTC]

Using the smudge tool is a pretty good idea~ I color with it in PS now

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizashi In reply to DemonedAway [2008-12-28 22:13:41 +0000 UTC]

I don't PS, but I also have this other program that uses the Smudge tool ^^ I just downloaded a plugin where Paint.NET can import your current layer into another program to edit! Then when you close the program, the layer has the changes in Paint.NET ^_^ I guess I could try out the smudge tool when blurring!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-28 21:56:45 +0000 UTC]

I've seen a patch somewhere, it adds the smudge tool.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizashi In reply to DemonedAway [2008-12-28 22:11:59 +0000 UTC]

Really? Smudge tool wouldn't be available until version 4.0 And brushes, too >.<

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-29 08:11:23 +0000 UTC]

Hah, if they keep on upgrading Paint.NET nobody will want to buy Photoshop anymore It's becoming more and more like it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizashi In reply to DemonedAway [2008-12-29 08:28:33 +0000 UTC]

Is that good or bad? Even if the upgrades stop, I shall keep using Paint.NET! ^^ I'm just really jealous of Photoshop's coloring, though T.T However, Paint.NET still needs to catch up to GIMP

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-29 08:44:20 +0000 UTC]

Bad for the people that own Photoshop xD I got Photoshop recently but I can't seem to find a good coloring technique so I use smudging for now.
Yes, GIMP has a few things that Paint.NET does not have. But GIMP is sort of hard to use. It confuses me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mizashi In reply to DemonedAway [2008-12-30 04:51:00 +0000 UTC]

I know! xD I downloaded GIMP once to try it out, but it was too confusing. Like it opened up a new window when I wanted to try an effect like a lens flare.

Hmm, lucky! How much did that Photoshop cost you? O.o

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DemonedAway In reply to Mizashi [2008-12-30 08:29:15 +0000 UTC]

It's Photoshop Elements, and I won it on auction for about... using the American value translation system it'd be something like 20$. I still can't believe I got it this cheap.
