Description
This is one of those projects I've had sitting around for the better part of a year that I'm just now getting around to submitting here on DA.My first foray into furniture making! I built this 15th century stool -really a narrow bench- out of a pine 2x12. I'm well aware that pine was not often a period choice for building material (except in Scandinavia), but... to be honest I wasn't sure how good a job I could do, and I didn't want to screw up on a +$50 piece of dimensional oak.
I copied/adapted the design of the stool from late 15th century furniture depicted in illuminations and sketches from the period. Emphasis seems to be on lots of angles, scooped cuts and concave curves. I was a little bit nervous sitting on it the first time, but honestly all the points and seemingly jagged edges are well away from you. I suppose there's a reason why the fashion managed to last as long as it did.
It's quite comfortable to perch on, and the darn thing is solid as a rock. I had expected that the mortises would require gluing, but I changed my mind in short order after knocking them in for a test fit.
In summary I'm well pleased with this thing. It's been used more than I ever imagined it would since I made it, and it's been a little trooper the whole time.

Well done, especially for your first project. I'm a professional furniture maker, and I recently designed and built a stool similar to this one:

I usually use wood in the rough from my hardwood dealer, but I've begun experimenting with using dimensional, home center stock to create quick and inexpensive designs. I have not sold any of those oak benches on etsy yet, probably because I want $175 for it, and it weighs 22lbs! Thinking pine for my items for sale. If you are interested in discussing medieval woodworking, or have a question, send me an email (info on contact page).

Agreed. When in doubt, overengineer it!
