"Rusalii" - "Rosalia, the festival of roses" - the pagan Slavic festival from the ancient Romans, dedicated to the rite of remembrance of the ancestors, which later became a Christian holiday.
In the ancient and old times Rusalii's dances were performed by young men dressed in white feminine clothes, with flower wreaths, decorated with colored ribbons. It was believed that their dancing relieve people from misfortune and disease.
I think it was an echo of pagan times, when ritual dances were performed by eunuchs or men dressed in women's clothes, since it was believed that to communicate with spirits and deities one should rise above the conditioned world, reincarnating into androgynous being. Neither a man nor a woman, being between two sexes and between the two worlds, earthly and heavenly, such a person had to adhere to physical and spiritual purity.
Remember the exact same angels who have no physical sex, beautiful and pure spirits of heaven, which the eunuchs of Byzantium, and later, eunuchs in Russia, tried to be like.
