Anaxagoras was the Excelsior generation equivalent of the TOS/TAS/TMP era Ptolemy family of Starfleet Class I transport/tugs. At heart it was Centaur modified for the transport/tug role, retaining all of Centaur's weaponry (following similar moves by other interstellar powers) but adding Hensley/Brownwood style dual tractor tow pads for Class I standard transport containers and modifying the shape of the warp engine support pylons to better fit around them. In addition to being the most heavily armed Class I auxiliary starship of its type when it first entered service early in the post-TMP era, the power of the standard "long" transwarp engines with which Anaxagoras was fitted allowed it to tow four fully laden standard transport containers at a fairly decent clip, even though its maneuverability suffered accordingly as with all laden transport/tugs. Furthermore, it could tow up to six with some difficulty and up to eight in an extreme emergency (and under strain), although the latter was only done three times per the official record across the entire service lifetime of the Anaxagoras class. Like its fellow Excelsior generation siblings, Anaxagoras would have a very long service lifespan with Starfleet, made possible with periodic refits and the occasional technology upgrade as required. It entered service in the early post-TMP era and a number of its members were still in service at the end of the TMP/DS9/VOY era, with no immediate plans by Starfleet at that time to retire them.

This is fanon, sadly, but right now it's filling a rather obvious hole in the official Franchise line-up for Excelsior generation Starfleet starship classes. I'll be glad to replace it with their official or licensed one should it ever happen and I become aware of it. Until then, I think you'll find that the fanon Anaxagoras is a perfectly acceptable filler for the time being for this missing piece of official Franchise canon.
