Description Here's my planet creation tutorial. I decided to share my technique of creating planets since I keep getting asked how I make mine. I think this method is a little easier and simpler than some other. The reason I didn't give a lot of information in the texture creation part is because there are a lot of tutorials out there that explain it, so I didn't find a reason to put myself through the effort of writing it in-depth.

I hope this tutorial helps you out. I tried making this easy to understand. You don't have to strictly follow these steps, you can experiment doing other things aswell. This is just a basic planet creation tutorial. I think everyone needs to develop their own ways of creating advanced planets, because otherwise everyone's planets will look the same.

Anyways, I hope you find this useful and answers some of your questions on how to create planets in Photoshop.

hmmm.. consider the fact though that some artists like photomanipulators (alas, i claim to be one) want just to incorporate -at some point- planets in their fantasy pictures, and they didn't really have a fast way (or a "shortcut") to create them.

maybe it doesn't promote space art, but you have to admit it can be useful to some people, the art of whom is not focused on planet making.

True, in that light, it IS useful - but it is NO more useful than the relatively simple tutorials made by + dinyctis ~Inventor and ~sirgerg that were made some time before. This is just like apple re-releasing the Ipod in a different colour and claiming it's a new product.

I looked at two of the tuts that alyn says already use the “exact same techniques” as this tutorial. They don’t - they’re similar, yes, but still show different ways of making a basic planet, and I think I prefer the technique in this one better. It seems rather snobbish to dismiss this tut because of its simplicity and because there are others that look like it already on DA, especially when so many people are finding it useful.

Personally, I think this tutorial is nifty. I’m not in the ‘in crowd’ of DA space art, and I’m a bit new to digital art in general, so this type of tut isn’t something I’d necessarily think to search for (all photoshop tuts are in the same category, anyway- hard to search for specific genre). I found this deviation accidentally, and I’m glad. It’s useful, simple, attractively laid out, and it made me want to try the technique. I’d say it’s a good product.

So what you suggest alyn, is that he should read and look through all tutorials already on the web and see if there is anything not mentioned that he think there should be?

I also made a basic planet tutorial, almost identical to those one i must say, but that only was a simplefied version of how i made them.

But i must agree one some parts, for example the texture, you always see good textures, like you used in your planet dude, or which *dilekt actually used in this tutorial, but you never see how people make them, or even a description.

totally agree with you and *genocide-54 , quite aside from the fact that i +watch you both, haha.
i especially hear what you're saying about creating tutorials being like art in itself, your tutorial was meticulous in its depth and very slick in presentation, that's the sort of thing that tutorials should be.. this one is all very well, but as you say, it doesnt teach the user how to create art, just how to replicate a formula method of making planets. This tutorial doesnt teach me anything i didnt know already from Greg Martin's, and don't come near the extra know-how i got from yours..
*shrug*

I couldnt agree more, I think that space art has lost a vast amount of respect that it once carried- now that the art scene has been flooded with so many quick tutorials and resources, it seems space art has just become a cheap way to spice up ANY kind of art that one might be working on at the time. Making a terragen render that isnt up to par by itself...just throw some a quick duplicated-1st take-tutorial-planet and nebula work to rake in some much needed favs!

Sci Fi art has to come back to the basics, those works of art that demand respect simply from the amount of effort and attention to detail in them, pieces that have been developed and studied over time- not :: "I made htis pic from a tut I found and it looks realy cool cuz planet (fast and eazy!) so I post ^^ ".

lol this discussion is becoming cliché eh?!
Yeah, I agree with you and alyn at all, but I'm also tired of listening those things that you said. NO, I haven't anythign agaisnt you and don't want to fight you, but imo we gotta just ingore this kind of people (that makes quick works) and keep up our long ones - we are all sure someday we will be respected in the way we should

Yeah this is the same exact way I do it, but dude, how did you make that texture?

Just pick up various types of textures (related to rock in overall) and use layer blendings but specially clone stamp....

I just guess why the master of the planets is asking such a ridiculous question. =o

I like this tutorial, although I have my own way of creating them, I'll this because i'd like to add some of your techniques to mine.
