Description Here's my planet creation tutorial. I decided to share my technique of creating planets since I keep getting asked how I make mine. I think this method is a little easier and simpler than some other. The reason I didn't give a lot of information in the texture creation part is because there are a lot of tutorials out there that explain it, so I didn't find a reason to put myself through the effort of writing it in-depth.

I hope this tutorial helps you out. I tried making this easy to understand. You don't have to strictly follow these steps, you can experiment doing other things aswell. This is just a basic planet creation tutorial. I think everyone needs to develop their own ways of creating advanced planets, because otherwise everyone's planets will look the same.

Anyways, I hope you find this useful and answers some of your questions on how to create planets in Photoshop.

hmmm... actually, the more methods and resources available are good, as they open the minds of the artists about the availability of methods out there to achieve a certain target. Great, and simple.

Most of I wanted to say has already been said so i would hav to agree most with Alyn the most to be honest but then again i dont do that much scifi art, well not any that i hav uploaded on to here anyways. Using short cuts does degrade the the quality of the work and the really good pieces of art r good because you can SEE that time has been spent on attention 2 detail etc.... anyways im off peace...

o.o ooo... i've been wondering how to get started into that...
and i disagree with those folk who say this is crap cuz it's a shortcut. me, i LOVE space artwork, but i don't even know where to START. this tutorial gives me a place to start. it doesn't mean that artists will only EVER use shortcuts.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

the-disposessed In reply to Blue0Scapegrace [2005-01-19 13:24:36 +0000 UTC]

yeah, but the point they were making is that this method doesnt teach you anything that other tutorials on the subject dont. It's just a rerun of a familiar theme... so for an artist already familiar with the tutorials out there as he is, to create another variation on them instead of developing the field, thats what annoyed alyn.
nothing against the existence of tutorials, yeah, everyone needs to start somewhere, but there's no need to keep making new tutorials of the same methods expressed in an even shorter way.

Thanks for sharing, mebbe i'll try this for something new.. been used to making 'expressive' planets from fractals... the amount of time, blood & sweat over an artwork is not an indicator of it's merit or rank. It's just not a valid indicator of an art's endurance or acceptance. Art can be created either fast or slow that becomes great. There are no rules!

Serious question now, in what way does this offer anything new that previous planet tutorials don't already offer (for example, +dinyctis 's method, ~ Inventor 's method, ~sirgerg 's method, or indeed my own? I'm not being a bitch, I just don't see anything new here.

In a more in depth criticism, personally, I don't believe in pushing out "shortcut" methods that encourage simple steps towards creating elements of art that are often the focal point, and that are indeed, such complex entities. It almost cheapens the art itself if the person isn't putting their whole back into it. They won't understand more about WHAT they're creating, and thus won't be able to create it so it looks and feels better.

There's not too much *wrong* with it, just not much right either. I could seriously break out into a rip-apart-rant on this one.

Imo this works great as a tutorial for new artists to work off of and build upon. Its what i did along while back and i think it works great. People realise this isnt the end all be all of planet art. There is a great deal lacking for it to be a all encompasing tutorial.

It however works great for what it sets out to do. It gives those struggling to learn, their first real helping hand to lead them on their way. I was extremely lost as to how to approach art like this until i found this tutorial. After having used it a few times in practice works, i began to better understand this form of art and thought of more creative uses for it.

Imo those calling this a ripoff or stating its a bad piece are really just being too narrow minded.

People need to remember, we arent all the same, we dont all learn the same way others do. Everyone is different. What works for you, does not work for the guy around the corner. Just because it isnt done your way, does not make it wrong.

Actually, upon reading it again after looking at a bit more of ~dilekt 's gallery, I have discovered that the technique he uses for creating atmospheres gives his planets a rather 'heavenly' sort of appeal (the specific image I am oogling right now is "Throne of God".

I think that this method of lighting works particularily well with rocky planets such as mercury, pluto, etc, as not only does it light it but it also gives it a wonderful glow.

My two cents. I use my own method, anyway.

im with you here. this tutorial is a blatent rip off, hoping none other than to get to the front page - like all the nicely put together tutorials do.

Like said in the description, this is only a basic planet creation walkthrough. It was intended so that the artist can get an idea on how to make planets. Just a starting point.

Of course some parts will resemble some methods used by other artists. There isn't much methods that one can do, excluding brushing it completely. I respect your opinion though. This a tutorial, not an artwork.

alyn In reply to dilekt [2005-01-18 23:03:32 +0000 UTC]

Basic planet creation walkthroughs utilising near enough the exact same techniques are available already. A good tutorial will bring in new techniques and ideas, and shed new light on aspects of art. This, really doesn't. Instead, it encourages taking short-cuts for quick low quality pieces of art. You have to spend TIME on your art for it to be worthwhile, and as someone who's most definitely a leading figure of the genre, you should recognise that. I would almost push this as "lazy".

I wholly recognise that this is a tutorial, not art, but the fact is, tutorials should have just as much time spent on them, because through them, you directly influence how future artists work.

Royce-Barber In reply to alyn [2006-08-17 00:19:47 +0000 UTC]

"Lazy" art inspires real art. One has to start somewhere, and for many it's never ever ever going to be with an intricate complicated tutorial. For many it requires a subtle hint and an easy instant gradification. I HATE following tutorials unless they are extremely easy because I just dont have the patience for CG, it doesnt matter to me, but I tend to like to play with the tools. For me, the more simple the tools the more I'll play with them. Some day I might catch on and use complicated tutorials that will propel me into the pro art scene.

MusingStar In reply to Royce-Barber [2007-04-16 09:15:18 +0000 UTC]

If this tutorial was meant for beginners at a very basic level, then those of you who already make godly-awesome and spectacular planetary art should slap yourselves on the wrist. Yes, none of you can benefit from this other than there are people who will know the shortcuts to make planets. Those who are devoted to their art and those who are beginners who want to make better planets can then advance their learning.

But their learning has to start somewhere and that's not being lazy by any means. Shame on yourselves.

Royce-Barber In reply to MusingStar [2007-04-17 07:26:37 +0000 UTC]

I start many areas in life not at the most advanced point, but at a humble begining where things can be fun and integrate easy into my lifestyle. The start of my art career almost never happened. What started me was a "lazy" tutorial. I have branched off into many other areas, using those lazy tutorials to suppliment my more advanced areas of art. I in a way, use lazy tutorials, to fill in the gaps where I am not interested in learning the advanced version.

I dont use lazy tutorials as a crutch, I use them when I need a quick fix to something I dont have interest in really learning much about.
