Description Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max

So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)

I made a JPEG tutorial because:

1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop

2) I didnt feel like writing HTML

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.

In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

It didn't create a new layer? If not, then just right-click the base layer on the layers palette and duplicate it.

I have a question. in the beginning you tell us to "increase the canvas size". Is this in pixels? because when I increased it (with the 1:1:1 ratio rule) the screen became blank. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! Please help!

Agh. This may well be a very stupid question, but with Photoshop 5 I'm having real issues finding the layer styles window. Like, ISSUES. I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious and embarrassing. Help, anyone?

Other than that... I'm really excited to finish this tutorial. Brilliantly simple!

This was made back when Photoshop 7 was the latest, hehe.

This is really helpful, but I have one question. What would you do if you want it to be unshadowed, like it's a full moon in the background? I tried not having the shadow layer, but it just didn't work right.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to napadan1990 [2010-08-12 11:42:17 +0000 UTC]

It probably doesn't look right because of the texture. If you followed these steps (in this tutorial), then the texture doesn't work too well for a full moon.

What you can try to do, however, is to not apply any blur to the shadow layer. Instead, try to add a black inner shadow (make sure that blending mode isn't set to "screen", though) to try to give it more of a "round" feel. But not a lot, maybe at 20 or even 10% opacity. That might work...

napadan1990 In reply to dinyctis [2010-08-13 05:12:26 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks, I'll try that. After I get it done I'll upload it and show you how it turned out, not gonna get to it tonight though because I'm too tired and can't focus long haha. Although when I edited the one I'd already done a little to make it similar to how you suggest it looks better, so I think it'll work.

Yup, i am the part where i am supposed to get rid of the shadow that goes outside the planet... i cant get that part to work -.-

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to GFXPeter [2010-07-18 21:11:32 +0000 UTC]

Got it.

1) So, at this point, you want to make sure that the shadow layer is active, meaning that it's the layer to which you'll be applying the changes (so it needs to be highlighted in the layer palette).

What we want to do now is erase everything that is outside the shape of the planet, since the shadow doesn't affect anything else.

2) In order to do this, hold down ctrl (or command on a mac) and click the little thumbnail of the layer called "base" in the layers palette. This will "select" the circular shape of the layer by showing an animated dotted line around it.

3) Since we want to erase everything outside of the current shape, we have to invert the selection. For this, you go to the select menu at the top of the screen and click "inverse." The shortcut for this is ctr+shift+i. So, now you should have a dotted line around the planet AND the border of the canvas.

4) At this point, you can just hit either the delete or the backspace key and you're done erasing the extra shadow around the planet. You may have a very thin bright line around the darker side of the planet, so just nudge the shadow layer a bit to cover it up (using the arrow keys).
