Description
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio maxSo i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
I made a JPEG tutorial because:
1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop
2) I didnt feel like writing HTML
If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.
In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

RSM-Only In reply to ??? [2010-10-06 16:13:34 +0000 UTC]
Very nice tut! But I have one question. Just started using photoshop. What do you mean by setting the layer active but not selected? Cuz I believe it went wrong with my planet at that point.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dinyctis In reply to RSM-Only [2010-10-07 13:44:54 +0000 UTC]
It means that it's active in the layers palette and that all the changes that you're making will be applied to that one layer.
What I mean by "selected" is the animated dotted line around the shape of a layer on the canvas

i don't get the part where you ctrl+click the base and then copy and paste. photoshop won't let me do it and it's getting quite frustrating. what am i doing wrong?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dinyctis In reply to Devfrost2000 [2010-09-03 12:25:06 +0000 UTC]
You do that on a number of steps. What stage are you in? Copying the base layer at the beginning? Working on the shadow after blurring it?

Devfrost2000 In reply to dinyctis [2010-09-03 12:26:59 +0000 UTC]
i'm working on the shadow, and want it to stick within the base instead of seeing this black blob over the background. i have been having some software issues with photoshop, maybe it's just not playing ball
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dinyctis In reply to Devfrost2000 [2010-09-03 13:37:32 +0000 UTC]
If you're trying to "select" the base layer so that you have a dotted line around the planet in order to erase the extra shadow...
You ctrl+click on the little window on the palette layer, not on the name (the tiny thumbnail to the left). That will select the shape of whatever layer that is. Then, you have to inverse it (ctrl+shift+I or just do it from the select menu). Once you do that, you can then go ahead and erase the remainder of the black blob, hehe.
