Description
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio maxSo i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
I made a JPEG tutorial because:
1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop
2) I didnt feel like writing HTML
If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.
In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

I'm not following what you're trying to say.
You mean in the section where it shows the effects to be added to the different layers? Those are all applied to the atmosphere layer.

I just have a quick question. For when you duplicate the layers and set them black, what exactly do you mean by that?

dinyctis In reply to Masteraar [2011-03-19 01:42:30 +0000 UTC]
Since the base layer was blue, what I mean by making them black is.....well, make them black! The easiest way is to drop the brightness on them to zero.

I only have one more question. For the shadow, it interferes with the atmosphere when I try to drag it out, the shadow stop very suddenly at a point, or make the atmosphere significantly darker. And clue what I'm doing wrong?

Help! I'm a novice. My skill level is maybe intermediate. I'm trying to learn from the pros like you guys so please be patient with me. I'm at the point where I've added the 3 different layer styles to the atmosphere layer. "Make new layer and link it with atmosphere." Is the new layer blank? I created a blank new layer. Link and merged it with the atomsphere layer. Set it to screen. I initially did not see any difference. What does adding the blank layer do? RM in Texas

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Unfortunately I have problems to copy the shadow layer, I press ctrl c but nothing happens. I also tried to copy it via the menu of PS but I can not select "copy". (sorry for my bad english)

You have to select everything first with ctrl+a (or apple+c on a mac).

Just a quick question, where you say to have the shadow layer active, then cntrl + the base layer. I do that, but when I press control + c nothing is copied to the clip board, and nothing will even happen for for control + v.

I've got a problem... when I have to apply the gaussian blur to the "shadow" layer, it doesn't work: the blur is not nice and gradual, it just ends suddenly and when I move it, it looks like a big round stain on the atmosphere.

I had the circle still selected in that level, I just had to select the whole "shadow" level. Problem solved. Thank you very much

In the beginning of the tut, when I try to add the blending options to the atmosphere layer for some reason I cannot get the color to stay in the Elliptical Marque. I'm adding everything in just as the tut says and I cannot think of anything else to get it to just have the effects in the circle. Please help.

Hi there, just a question regarding this tutorial...
when getting rid of the shadow layer, what do you mean when you say, 'active, not selected'? That is the only part that I found iffy but other than that thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial!
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
dinyctis In reply to Chantari [2011-01-01 21:10:17 +0000 UTC]
I mean active by being the layer in which you're working, but not selected as in no dotted lines around the shape of the layer.

Oh, One problem though, I am kinda having some trouble with the
part where you have to remove the extra shadow from the background,
the ctrl + v doesn't copy the layer in Photoshop cs5... What can I do instead?
